Although I’ve been under a pile of editing work these past couple of weeks (I love my job as an editor) that has kept much of my attention from the blog, it hasn’t squelched my anticipation and excitement about the opening of Nico’s Cantina. I’ve been eager to know of their opening day and Nico finally released that detail: Saturday, September 24 at 3pm.
More things to know about the grand opening on Saturday:
- Opening hours will be 3-10pm.
- Live mariachi band music to start
- DJ Blas to follow later in the evening
- Limited food menu
- Full cocktail menu
After opening day, you’ll likely be able to to partake in their full food menu. Nico shared the full slate of taco fillings (tacos are a very important part of the menu at the Cantina) and they include:
- Meats: Asada, Carnitas, Pollo, Lengua, Suadero,
- Seafood: Camarones
- Vegetable: Nopales, Rajas

I also noticed that they will be offering chamoy as an option for the rim of your chelas (beer): sour apple, pickle, mango, and tamarindo. This condiment will add a combination of flavors to your beer that I find highly satisfying: sweet, sour, tangy, and spicy. Plus it looks cool (I think so, anyway). The chamoy is made by Gabriella Martinez, aka @sweetcreaturepdx and formerly of República (now at Dame). And judging from the photo of Sol beer (it’s better than Corona), I know somebody who is going to be very happy to see this.
Much of the space will be filled with hand-crafted details, from the stools to the signage. Plus the ingredients in the food (i.e., tortillas made locally).
I’m pretty chuffed about Nico’s Cantina and can’t wait to check it out. See you there!
