Upright Brewing Cully End of 2022 Update

Looking northeast from NE Prescott

While I was on a walk today on the east side of Cully, I found myself in close proximity to the incoming Upright Brewing taproom—still under construction, but getting close. So I thought I’d take a few photos. It really is looking good.

As you can see above, the place has been cleaned up quite a bit—new paint (love that blue color), windows tidied up, and new asphalt covering. As a reminder, this is what it looked like after the car wash closed and it was sitting there, sort of abandoned, complete with tagging—and squatters at one point.

I emailed Alex Ganum, owner of Upright Brewing, earlier this month and he shared some details. First off, they are shooting for an updated opening in January 2023, and that includes Upright, Junior’s Roasted Coffee, and the two food trucks—Chaat Wallah and another cart TBD. They also have their initial set of outdoor tables and planter-benches in place—made by Redwood Northwest—which look pretty nice.

Once spring arrives, they expect to have even more of these tables and planter-bench combos on site. They may even build a fixed canopy over the cart area, which seems to be on the 72nd Ave side of the property.

Alex reminded me about the collaborations going on among the three elements—beer brewing, coffee, and food cart. Upright has been working on a couple version of a milk stout, one with Junior’s coffee and one with Chaat Wallah’s chai blend.

I asked about their hours for the new spot. “They aren’t set,” said Alex, “but we’ve been tossing around 7am to 3pm for Junior’s and 3pm to 10pm for the brewery on weekdays, with us opening earlier on Sat/Sun, probably noon, so there would be overlap on those days. Definitely subject to change though.” Those sound like reasonable hours, so I expect the final ones to resemble these.

As someone who is fascinated by non-alcoholic beers, I asked him if Upright would ever consider dipping into that world. “Doing it well requires some significant equipment and it isn’t super feasible for a tiny brewery.” A reasonable and understandable response.

I’ll continue to keep an eye on this project and am looking forward to welcoming everyone involved with this taproom to the Cully/Roseway neighborhood.
