Personally Bummed: Lazy Susan Is Closing July 23

Mennonite Peanut Butter Pie—one of the best desserts in Portland.

I saw the news on their Instagram today: Lazy Susan is closing; Sunday, July 23 is their final day of service. This is a surprise to me, as it seemed—judging from the difficulty in getting a walk-in table—that they were doing ok. And as the headline says, I am personally bummed about this closure.

Lazy Susan has been on my short list of great places in this town to take out-of-town guests. The food is delicious and the interior is comfortable and feels a bit elevated compared to places similar to it. There’s a lovely warmth to the place (literally and figuratively). I loved eating in there.

Here’s the message they posted today:

“It comes with a heavy heart that Sunday, July 23rd, will be our last day of service. We will be operating regular business hours until then serving dinner, brunch, happy hour, oysters cocktails, and much more. We are eternally greatful for all that have shown us love since March of 2020. It has been a wild ride. Pandemic, inflation, wild fires, record-breaking heatwaves, and you all still showed up. So now it’s time to come show love one last time. Walkin and reservations are welcome.

“Cheers to new beginnings”

Things I’ve especially loved eating at Lazy Susan: the smoked whitefish with fried saltines; any salad, but the wedge is fab; any of the veg cooked in their wood-fired oven; salmon skewer; pork secreto; the burger; the little fondue (it was not overly boozy, which I appreciated). They have had great mocktails with opal ice nuggets, and that awesome Mennonite peanut butter pie. I’ll miss it all.

This is a huge loss for Montavilla, though in my mind the silver lining is that this location was home to the Country Cat, which was very good. Then Lazy Susan followed, also very good. So will Montavilla be graced with another great eatery in this location? I will keep that hope alive.

Best of luck to the Lazy Susan folks wherever their next adventure takes them.
