This morning I read an email from a Bridgetown Bites reader about a new food cart pod coming to NE Fremont Street. It will be in the old Barrett Automotive space there on the northeast corner of 44th Avenue.
The primary source for this tip is from the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Association newsletter (January/February 2024). The article is brief but contains a lot of good information, appropriate for this moment in time, as the development is in its early phase. The location, as I mentioned, is the old Barrett Automotive space just west of the 4-story Beaumont Apartment building (Momiji Sushi is there on the ground floor of that building). Barrett Automotive opened in 1944 and closed in April 2021.

Here are more details, many of which are from the BWNA newsletter article:
- Opening: The food cart pod is scheduled to open summer 2024.
- Developers: David and Daniel Silvey of DBS Group are developing the pod.
- Architects: The architects are Woodblock Architecture—some of their past projects include the Oswego Grill, a variety of ChefsTable properties (Tasty, Lardo, Grassa), and Ate-Oh-Ate.
- Demolition: There was a demolition permit filed with the City of Portland (status is “Under Review as of the writing of this article) last summer for this address. This includes deconstruction of the single family residence (the “central building”), cap the sewer, keep the driveway approach, and remove all debris.
- Renovation: Any remaining buildings will be renovated to “create a seven-unit food cart pod with indoor and outdoor seating, a bar, and other amenities.” There is a permit filed for this.
- Vibe: The Silveys want to “maintain the industrial feel” and keep the character that is there.
- Name: The pod does not have a name … yet.
- Future carts: Exact carts are unknown at this time. If you are a cart owner that is interested in participating in this pod, call Daniel Silvey at (503) 201-8537.
Silvey says in the article: “There was no central gathering place in this retail-heavy business district, which a food cart pod often creates. These places tend to bring people together.” I am all for more places for people to gather. There is a lot of talk these days about the mental health of the nation (especially young people) and how face-to-face socializing can help improve that. The pandemic really stunted socialization, and projects like that remind me that we are moving in an upward trajectory on that point.
Many thanks to the BWNA newsletter’s editor, Susan Trabucco, for revealing this project. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all works out! I’ll also see if I can find out more information as we get closer to summer 2024.
