A new pizzeria is coming to northeast Portland: Broadway Pizza Shoppe. They will be located in the old Benditos Latin Fusion space on NE 15th Avenue, which opened April 17 of this year. Previously, and for a number of years, it was home to Blossoming Lotus, which closed just a couple weeks earlier on April 3.
I reached out to Brittany Scull, one of the owners of Broadway Pizza Shoppe. She, her dad, and his business partner are opening it. It also turns out that her dad used to own Blossoming Lotus. He currently owns five restaurants with his partner; Brittany has been in the food industry for 13 years.
How Broadway Pizza Shoppe Came To Be
She explained a bit of the timeline between the closing of Blossoming Lotus and the development of Broadway Pizza Shoppe:
“The location was previously known as the Blossoming Lotus vegan restaurant, owned by my father,” she explained. “But it wasn’t what he was interested in any longer, so he put the business up for sale. The initial buyer backed out after his idea wasn’t able to come to life, so it fell back in my fathers lap, leaving the space back on the market and empty for months.”
She continues, “When I was in my hometown on the coast for a visit, we threw around the idea after I had recently quit my day job. I was desperate to not go back to a 9-to-5 and he needed someone to take this restaurant off his hands. We made a few phone calls, proposed a plan, and the race was on to open.
Her father doesn’t have any past pizza experience, but he knows the restaurant/business world. However, Brittany has worked in four different styles of pizza kitchens, so she can bring the pizza knowledge to the business. “We have both tossed around the idea of a pizza place for years but the timing was never right,” she remarked. Until now.
What Kind of Pizza?
They’ll be doing a New York-style pizza by the slice, as well as full size pizzas and things to drink. Look for dine in, to-go, and delivery through third party services.
I asked about if they were going to serve alcohol, and for now, that’s a no. “We have decided to give it some time to gain traffic before introducing other products like alcohol or more food items,” Brittany said. We want to make sure we nail down the one thing that we want to be about: Pizza.”
“I may be a little biased, but the recipes we have will have you coming back for another slice!” she exclaimed.
The Space and Name
They have done some redesigning of the interior and they turned it into a vintage style pizzeria—lots of old school decor and neons, very comfy and casual. Plus you can watch the game there. “We have a connection with some local Blazers fans who run a fan page of almost 30k people, so we will have TVs up to broadcast games, and will be doing Blazer fan pop-up showings, as well.”
I asked her about the name origins. They are just a couple doors down from NE Broadway, plus Broadway is a major street in NYC. “We decided on Broadway Pizza Shoppe, after drafting up some name ideas and hearing it out loud,” Brittany explained. “It has a casual and welcoming ring to it. Nothing too fancy, and welcoming to everyone!”
They hope to open by the second or third week of November, and be open for lunch and dinner. Their open days will be Thursdays through Mondays, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check their social media for updates on their opening.
Best of luck to Brittany, her dad, and their team as they work to open Broadway Pizza Shoppe.
