The address 330 NW 10th Avenue for a number of years was known as the location of Isabel, a popular Latin-Asian fusion restaurant. But, according to ORSOS records, it will be the future home to a new restaurant from Chookiat Saenguraiporn, the Thai restauranteur who is behind a handful of popular eateries in Portland. Update 7/28/25: The restaurant’s name is Guay Tiew (registered under KUAY TIEW, LLC; the first word is often spelled in English as “guay.”)

Back in October, a reader contacted me with the following: “Old news, but the former Isabel space in the Pearl has been up for sale since roughly May. Another Covid casualty as I recall … There was some modest activity in there all winter and spring, likely preparing the space and clearing it out. Fond remembrances of brunches past.”

According to the Multnomah County Oregon Property Records database, it was sold to Saenguraiporn on November 12, 2024.

A Bit About Isabel Pearl

As our reader mentioned, brunch was notable there in the Pearl. But aside from its brunch popularity, there was an unfortunate side to things, too. The Oregonian reported in 2012, “The Elizabeth Lofts Condominium Owners Association has filed suit demanding back dues from Isabel LLC, the parent company behind Latin-Asian fusion restaurant Isabel, which is attached to the condo.”

It was later foreclosed on and put up for auction in 2022.

Who Is Chookiat Saenguraiporn?

He is the restauranteur behind three popular Thai restaurants in Portland

  • Khao Moo Dang, offering its titular dish, as well as Bah Mhee, curry noodles, dumplings, rice, and more. It “is a tribute to the everyday comfort food of Thailand.” 3145 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland
  • Thai Peacock, offers a “fresh take on Thai comfort food.” Soups, salad, curries, rice, and noodle dishes. 219 SW 9th Avenue, Portland
  • RukDiew Cafe, offering classic Thai dishes in a very Instagrammable space. 2534 SE Belmont Street, Portland

Fun fact: Khao Moo Dang opened in the old Chiang Mai space, and that’s where I took the photo of Thai Iced with lime that graces the header image of this website.

What Is Guay Tiew?

Guay Tiew is a Thai boat noodle soup; “guay tiew” means “noodles” in Thai. It is a popular street food dish. In my research I’ve learned that it is sometimes eaten for breakfast.

A bowl of guay tiew can involve—along with the rice noodles—ground pork, meatballs, fresh herbs, and is topped with crushed peanuts and garlic. You can enjoy it dry or with broth. Some people add chili oil to it, as well as basics like fish sauce, sugar and/or vinegar. It’s a light soup, and on its own can be pretty mild, so the above-mentioned additions are understandably welcome.

I will reach out to Chookiat Saenguraiporn for more info. I suspect they are early in the process, but I’ll ask what’s up. It will be great to have something in that space from a restauranteur with such a good track record of success.
