ICYMI: The historic RingSide Steakhouse closed temporarily, as they suffered a fire last weekend. They will remain closed as they figure out what’s next and how to fix the damage.

What Happened?

Unlike the fire at Caffe Mingo/Bar Mingo, this one happened in the middle of the afternoon rather than the middle of the night. Firefighters arrived around 2:15pm and put out the fire pretty quickly.

The RingSide team is still in the early stages of assessing the damage to the restaurant, and are no doubt looking ahead to what might have to be done to rebuild the areas that were damaged. The place was affected by fire, smoke, and water. They sent over an official statement that I will share with you below.

The Statement From RingSide Steakhouse

On [Saturday], April 5, a fire broke out behind the stainless steel lining of the sauté and south grill stations in the kitchen. Thanks to the swift response from our team on-site and the Portland Fire Department, the fire was contained quickly and, most importantly, no one was injured.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. In the process of ensuring everyone’s safety and extinguishing the fire, our roof sustained quite a bit of damage and significant portions of our dining room and kitchen experienced water and smoke damage. As a result, the restaurant will be closed while we work through repairs and restoration.

While we don’t yet have a timeline for reopening, there is a lot of work to be done to reopen the restaurant. We have begun coordinating with our insurance provider and a team of contractors to assess the damage and begin the process of rebuilding. While there may be some time before you’re able to enjoy dinner with us again, please continue to support all of the other excellent food and beverage options that Portland has to offer.

This is a deeply emotional moment for our entire team, many of whom have dedicated years (if not decades) to making RingSide a special place for our guests and our city. We are heartbroken, but above all, we’re grateful that everyone is safe.

Thank you to all of those who have reached out to assist and shown so much love and support. We will share updates as we have them, and we appreciate your patience and kindness during this time.

Destructive fire at a restaurant is tragic and surreal, as fire is a normal part of the creative process in most restaurant operations. Last year we saw a number of fires at restaurants and other food locations in Portland: Portland Mercado, OX, Shin Shin Foods, Pacific Market, 42nd Avenue Fish and Chips, Fifty Licks, and the aforementioned Caffe and Bar Mingo.

Our hearts go out to the RingSide family and staff, and I hope they can get back on their feet sooner than later. Wishing them all the best as they manage through this process.
