It’s that time of year again: Time to order your Iliamna salmon shares! I’ve written about them before, but can’t resist singing their praises again. This CSF (community supported fishery) is a personal love of mine, and I’m happy to pass on this year’s details on shares.
Commitment to Sustainability
One thing that appealed to me originally—all the way back in 2010—was Iliamna’s commitment to sustainability in their fishing practices, which remains as solid as ever. You can read about their approach on their website. Regulations—aka protections—set by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game have made it possible to fish at the Bristol Bay for many years. As they say, “Over 40 years of steadfast management has made Bristol Bay a model for sustainable fisheries around the world.”

That management includes supporting subsistence fishing rights for indigenous people, and “no fishing is allowed until the biologists who manage the fishery determine that sufficient numbers of fish have escaped to their natal rivers, streams and lake to spawn.”
They also fish with short nets and their bycatch percentage is very low: 0.015%. That bycatch is solely the bottom-feeding starry flounder (platichthys stellatus)—18 flounders per season, per boat. No other fish are part of the bycatch. And 90% of that is returned alive back to the ocean.

Iliamna Salmon Shares and More: Overview
Iliamna originally offered just salmon shares—beautiful whole sockeye salmon filets. When I used to get them in NYC it was one of the best purchases I would make each year back there. And that value remains to this day. Salmon cooks in 10-15 minutes; make a salad while it’s cooking, and you have a great meal in less than 30 minutes. Their salmon is sashimi-grade, so you can eat it raw and in sushi.
Today, not only can you order their salmon shares—full filets or portioned filets—but you can order canned salmon (3.5oz cans or 5.6oz cans) and Alaskan cod. As for smoked salmon for summer shares, there’s no need to pre-order that. You can purchase it by the piece at the pick-up location.
Canned Salmon
I wanted to highlight this canned salmon option, because it’s particularly excellent for a quick meal. I did not order canned salmon last year, though I had some cans the year before, and I regret my mistake in 2024. I will not make the same mistake twise.
Here’s their description of this offering:
“Our canned sockeye salmon is canned fresh on the fishing grounds in BPA free cans. This is a skinless and boneless preparation with only salt added. It is easy to eat right out of the can, or check out our salmon salad recipe in the recipe section above. Canned salmon is a pantry staple in Europe and Canada and is a family favorite around our house. We think you will love adding this healthy and quick meal option to your routine!”
