King Cakes in Portland: Where to Find Them in 2026

The Three Kings.
The Three Wise Kings, Atlas Catalàn, 1375, Fol. V.

It’s time to start thinking about getting your king cakes in Portland! Today is the fifth day of Christmas, but on January 6 Christmas is over and Three Kings Day—aka Epiphany—arrives, setting off the Epiphanytide. This day recognizes the story of the Magi (aka Three Wise Men) who we are told visited Jesus and gave him gifts. It was a way to say, “we’re glad you’re here,” among other things.

Cultures throughout the globe celebrate this important day in Western Christianity—here’s a map of countries that celebrate. The night of January 6 is Christmas Eve in the Orthodox church, too, so it’s an important day in both the Western and Eastern churches.

Whether you go with the Galette des Rois, NOLA King Cake, or Rosca de Reyes, you’ll find them all available in our fair city. And you do not have to be religious or a person of faith to enjoy them! Here’s where to find your king cakes in Portland.

This version is traditionally made with puff pastry and filled with a sweet almond cream—very simple in concept but it punches above its weight in deliciousness. Like with all king cakes, there is a baby or a fève inside it; if you find it in your piece, you get special treatment.

French-tastic Patisseries

Mylene creates gluten-free pastries and she is offering a GF Galette des Rois for the season. Pre-orders are open now; they close on Saturday, January 10. Her Galette is made with a GF puff pastry and filled with frangipane of varying flavors: almond vanilla, almond matcha, pistachio rose, and hazelnut orange.

Sizes include 6-inches (serves 6) and 9-inches (serves 8), as well as a “slice flight,” where you choose three slices filled with the flavor(s) of your choice. Pricing is $19, $39, and $11, respectively.

Place your order on her Hotplate page. Pickup is from 10am to noon on Saturday, January 3 and 10, and Sunday, January 4, at Yours Truly in Sellwood.

La Provence

La Provence is back again this year with their King Galette/Galette des Rois. It has layers of caramelized puff pastry with an almond cream filling. The doll/baby and a crown are included in each cake, which costs $45.

They are taking little different approach this year: There are no online or pre-orders going on, but they are stocking them at their locations so they can be purchased and picked up same day. Also, customers can also call any store ahead of time and reserve one for the day they want to pick it up. They are in-store now.

Southwind Microbakery

Eve Kutterman is making her Pecan Galette des Rois this year. They are 6-inches in diameter at $18 each. Here’s the description she sent us:

“A Southern spin on the style of king’s cake made in northern France, that takes over every Parisian bakery in January. Puff pastry surrounds a rich pecan filling made with tiny, rich native pecans. There is a surprise inside: a “feve” (I use a black-eyed pea as a nod to my mom’s new year’s tradition); whoever gets the slice with the feve is king for the day. May you rule wisely.”

These galettes will be on her menu for the whole month of January, available every Wednesday to Saturday with at least one day’s notice. DM her on Instagram to order.

St. Honoré Boulangerie

Having eaten the ones from St Honoré in the past, I know their Galette des Rois are really excellent. Like last year, they are offering two sizes: a 9-inch (Medium, serves 8, $55) and an 12-inch (Large, serves 12, $79.50) cake. It comes with a porcelain fève, a golden paper crown, how to reheat the galette, and how to have a good time and celebrate this delicious cake.

Each galette is baked to order and requires a 48-hour notice. Available for pickup now through January 31. Order here:  9-inch, 12-inch.

King Cakes in Portland: NOLA-Style King Cakes

King cakes in Portland: NOLA-style from Gris Gris Kitchen.

I have a friend in New Orleans who I expect is plotting her tour of king cakes in her home town, starting on January 6. Her excitement for them is contagious. Many of these cakes are full of vibrant colors, including purple, the color of royalty.

Gris Gris Kitchen

Bonnie Ward Strauss, the founder of Gris Gris Kitchen, is offering NOLA-style king cakes this year. She has four flavors to choose from:

  • Traditional Cinnamon & Sugar, $40
  • Sweet Cream Cheese & Cinnamon, $50
  • Praline-Topped Cream Cheese, $60
  • Praline-Topped Traditional, $55

She’s also making Galette des Rois ($45) and it serves 6 to 8 people. Place your orders on her Square site. Pickup is the standard but there is delivery possible for an additional fee. Pickup is on January 8 and 9, 2026.

Popular in Latin American countries, this version’s name translates to “bread of kings.” As I wrote last year, it’s full of symbolism: “The shape of the cake represents a crown; the dried fruit symbolizes jewels. These jewels were envisioned to represent those in the crowns of the three wise men—Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar—as well as peace, love, and happiness. The hidden muñeco (doll) represents when Mary and Jacob hid Jesus from Herod.”

Costco

I was by Costco last weekend and saw boxes of Rosca de Reyes cakes there. Three figurines are included. At the time they were about $17.

Dos Hermanos

They are making Rosca de Reyes this year and offering something I haven’t seen before: a savory filling! This is a great option for those who wants something not sweet. The savory filling is ham cheddar, and jalapeño, and they have plain and cinnamon & coconut on the sweet side.

They have small (3 dolls) and medium (5 dolls), and are only available in-store (no pre-orders). You can purchase them at both locations from Sunday, January 4 to Tuesday, January 6.

La Casa de Mama

This Latina-owned vegan Mexican panadería has again made their special version of a Rosca de Reyes with conchas and “decorated with a Talavera-inspired design inspired by traditional Mexican tiles.” It has a tamalitos filled with candied fruit that takes the place of a traditional muñeco. Find it, and you get to make tamales for Candelmas. This is $60.

You can also order a box of mini Roscas de Reyes: “Each mini rosca is individually decorated with chocolate, vanilla, and traditional candied fruit, and one includes a hidden mini tamalito, just like the classic.” This is $32.

You can order their Roscas (big or box of 6 minis) now until Wednesday, January 7. Pick up in NE Portland.

On their ordering page, they announced, “In solidarity with our community and what they are facing, we’re keeping the same prices from last year.”

They are offering a traditional Roscas De Reyes in three sizes:

  • Small (serves 6 to 7) for $40.
  • Medium (serves 15-20) for $70.
  • Large (serves 25-30) for $110.
  • You can order four additional muñecos in addition to the two that come with the cake.
