Small Bites: Landmark Saloon, Expatriate, Steely’s, and More

Not anything from Landmark Saloon, but the Expatriate Burmese tea leaf salad

Landmark Saloon closes today. They announced that today is their final day of service. “It was a hell of a run. Come in and raise a glass to some old friends while you can … Let’s hope things work out and someone great takes over the space.” 4847 SE Division Street, Portland

Bobadochi has opened on NE Alberta. Their grand opening was February 7 (here’s our previous coverage). Stop by for boba teas, mochi donuts, and K-dogs. 2017 NE Alberta Street, Portland

Langbaan gets some love. Chris Tharp over at Islands wrote a nice little compiled post on Langbaan, quoting from a variety of online sources about the award-winning restaurant. I liked the use of the phrase “deep cuts” when describing the kind of Thai food offered there. 1818 NW 23rd Place, Portland

Wine inventory sale at 82 Acres. On Sunday, February 22 from 10am to 1pm, 82 Acres is selling wine at discount prices. They are “revamping the wine list and some wines need a new home. Everything from back-vintage treasures from across Europe to cult Oregon producers and more.” There will be discounts on cases, individual bottles are priced to sell, and there will be complimentary mimosas. 2032 SE Clinton Street, Portland

Plus, a birthday celebration at 82 Acres. If you can believe it, 82 Acres is turning one year old, and they are doing an Abbey Road Farm Tasting popup on Monday, February 16. You can reserve your spot on their Open Table page—note that even though 4pm is listed as the only time available, you can show up any time between 4pm and 7pm.

And if you miss this event, all is not lost: Dine between Sunday, February 22 and Sunday, March 1 and Abbey Road Farm wines will be half off. 2032 SE Clinton Street, Portland

Korean Mama visits Nice Time. This cart in the Union on Hawthorne pod is Italian food via Korea (Korean-inspired pasta dishes). “Nice Time has two locations in South Korea and they just opened their first spot in SE Portland a couple months ago.” The folks at Nice Time make all the pasta noodles, and sauces/ragus take six hours to prepare. Mama and Son tried the Steak Ragu, Gochujag Ragu, and White Ragu. Mama gave them all 10/10. 3757 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Birthday freebies and discounts for/around your birthday. Redditor Queernp has spent the last four years (!) compiling this list of free things you can get on and around your birthday. Head over there and check it out. A mix of indie spots and chains, it’s pretty amazing, and the list creator’s work is much appreciated. Multiple locations

Odd Moe’s Pizza in Hillsboro has closed. Their final day of service was Sunday, February 8. Owner Nick Potts bought the franchise pizzeria in 2021, but found that since last June business has declined. “The sales just haven’t been there to pay the bills. And you just get so far in a hole, you just have to kind of stop the bleeding. I was trying to pass on the ownership to a local person, but that didn’t work out,” he said. They offered what is called Northwest-style pizza. 2087 NW 185th Avenue, Portland

Steely’s is opening in the former Gigantic Brewing space on Hawthorne. Gigantic ended things there on Saturday, January 24. And yesterday the announcement was made that a new place called Steely’s is moving in. It’s a collaboration between Smitty’s Taphouse and Little Brother. Their aim is to “create the world’s first ultimate chill zone, the most non sports bar sports bar.”

Look for food like burgers, bologna sandwiches, wings, and fries, and a curated tap list. Opening date TBD. 4343 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

New Mexican food at Scandal’s East? Over on Nextdoor, the owner of Scandals East posted, “We feature simple, affordable New Mexican food and have a basic and expanding bar.” New Mexican food‽ That caught my eye, since there isn’t a lot of that in Portland. A post on Facebook in December said this:

“The restaurant is open to all, regardless of age, and the menu is simple, healthy, affordable, fast, and tasty. I lived in New Mexico for several years and my love for New Mexican food is featured in the menu. Enjoy carne adovada (pork slow cooked in red chile sauce), pollo, black beans, pinto beans, and rice. The concept is simple: Build a platter and choose a variety of toppings, such as red or green chile, cilantro aioli, cheese, or pico de gallo. Drinks and dessert are also available. The bar, which is 21+, serves signature cocktails, local wines, bottled beers, and a limited/rotating selection of draught beer and cider.” 827 NE Alberta Street, Portland

The Place PDX will close. This dry cider-focused bottle shop and bar (plus natural wines, sandwiches, and snacks) on the north edge of the Brooklyn neighborhood is closing in “two weeks,” which means Sunday, February 22 will be their final day open. In their Instagram announcement they said, “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our strange, beautiful & joyous living room of passionate freaks.” Read more about them here. 1212-D SE Powell Blvd, Portland

Papa’s Fritas will leave Migration Brewing on N Williams. Their final day there will be Sunday, February 15. They posted, “This is by no means the end of Pápas Fritas.” They are looking for a new location, but in the meantime they’ll do pop-ups and catering. 3947 N Williams Avenue, Portland

It seems Expatriate has closed. Over on Reddit on Tuesday evening a photo was posted of a sign that is affixed on the door at Expatriate that reads, “Life is just a party, and parties weren’t meant to last” (a quote from Prince’s “1999”) and “Our privilege, these 4,595 nights. Thank you. Love, KLW et al.” There is some additional Latin that was unclear in the photo. In a message exchange with Kyle Webster this week, he wrote, “I’ve never closed a bar before. You can quote me on that.”

This is the end of an era in the Portland food and drink scene, and there’s been an outpouring of feelings from many who will deeply miss Expatriate. All the best to Kyle and to his team who made the Expatriate experience so beautiful. 5424 NE 30th Avenue, Portland

Legacy Coffee Company is now Legacy Coffee & Books. According to their ORSOS record, Legacy Church in Troutdale is the Registered Agent for the Gresham coffee shop. This church is part of the Assemblies of God, a Pentecostal denomination that actively evangelizes, and believes in promoting the Christian religion in any location (and medium). This leads me to wonder if the coffee shop will qualify as one of these locations, and if so, what beliefs will they evangelize about? I took a look at their bylaws to give myself a better idea of these beliefs.

New management took over February 2, 2026. As of the writing of this column, the Instagram and Facebook pages for Legacy the coffee shop are blank. 112 Main Avenue, Gresham

The pairing of Soro Soro and Nationale. Over at the Willamette Week they publish a series called “Form & Flavor,” which “pairs an ongoing art show with a nearby restaurant.” I love this concept. This week it’s Soro Soro, the Korean-style coffee shop that makes some of the cutest smol treats in all of Portland; and Nationale, an art space just around the corner from Soro Soro.

At Nationale, you can find Billboards by Charlie Salas-Humara, “a collection of spunky, multicolored, and imaginatively abstract paintings.” It will be up for viewing through Sunday, February 15.

The article has more info, but it sounds like a great combination, these two things. 2250 E Burnside Street and 15 SE 22nd Avenue, Portland

Carts at Xplore are now open. This pod in Beaverton at the corner of NW Cornell and NW Twin Oaks Drive opened at the end of January. Xplore is an indoor playground and the pod is outside. Carts include Shawarma Express, Coastal Vibes Fish & Chowder Co, Dhaba Indian, Hibachi, East Coast Eddie’s (Philly cheesesteaks), Chin’s BBQ. I believe more carts are coming. 16365 NW Twin Oaks Drive, Beaverton

And Modhaus is open (sorta). Over on Reddit a user posted that the Modhaus pod is in soft opening mode. The building—former home to Authentic Thai restaurant, which closed in 2023—still needs work. But a few carts are open. This pod is from the folks behind the very popular pod, The Heist. 3829 SE Division Street, Portland

February 10 is for Italian food. Both Willamette Week and Portland Monthly posted Italian food roundups on the same day. There must be something saucy in the air. For WW, their focus was on Bolognese sauce, and they included Monty’s Red Sauce, Maglia Rosa, Lilla, Sunday Sauce, and Bocci’s Peace and Pasta. PoMo’s list, which was a list of favorites of “Italian-American red sauce joints and Old World trattorias” also included Maglia Rosa and Sunday Sauce, as well as a Cena, Campana, Estes, Gabbiano’s, Gumba, Fantino, Luce, Nostrana, and Pizza Italia. BTW, Gumba’s new home will be just four blocks east of its current home, which is great news. Multiple locations

Ajisai Sushi & Steak has opened in Beaverton. Located in the old Cracker Barrel, they opened this past weekend. Reviews on Yelp and other online areas seem pretty positive, though remarking that it’s a bit spendy, but YMMV. There’s hibachi and sushi, as well as a bar and a quieter dining section. You can choose a variety of options—the hibachi show, multi-course meals, and individual dishes. It looks very clean and modern in there. 4050 SW 114th Avenue, Beaverton

Today is Sheridan Fruit Company’s final day. Thanks to a tip from Stumptown Savings, I learned that Sheridan Fruit Company’s final day open is today, Friday, February 13. They are open 9am to 5pm. Their Instagram had this message:

“Since 1916, it has been our greatest honor to be a part of your kitchens, your holiday traditions, and your daily lives. We have been proud to champion local farmers and serve the city we love for over a century. While we fought hard to stay, we choose to focus now on the gratitude we have for our journey.”

They thanked their staff and customers for all the years they had with them. This is yet another significant closing in Portland less than two months into the calendar year. Farewell, Sheridan’s. 409 SE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland

Inssa Gastropub will open on NE Broadway. This space at NE Broadway and 9th Avenue has been home to a variety of Asian restaurants over the years: Umi Sushi, which also served Korean food, then renamed Korea bentō; it was HAK for a while, and then Sool K Pocha and Suul K-BBQ Pub. Soon, it looks like it will be Inssa Gastropub, also serving Korean food.

They opened their first location in March 2024 in Chino Hills, CA. They offer Korean fusion dishes like “crispy fried chicken, sizzling pork belly, and spicy rose shrimp pasta.” You can read more about them on their website. Projected opening date is Thursday, April 2, 2026. 914 NE Broadway, Portland
