Apples for cider

It’s that time again: Portland Cider Company’s Community Cider program (AKA PDX Apple Recycling) has launched! And they want your apples… and fruit! Fallen and unwanted backyard apples, pears, berries, plums and other fruit—all are welcome. Drop them off Monday through Saturday from 9am to 9pm at Portland Cider Company’s Clackamas Taproom + Cidery (8925 SE Jannsen Rd, Bldg. F). They will then hand-press them into a community cider; 100% of net proceeds of the cider sales will go to support Hunger-Free Oregon. While driving along NE Sandy Blvd (again), I noticed that part of Second Profession Brewing windows were papered over—at this point after so many years of neighborhood blogging, papered-over windows always catch my eye and get me wondering. I stopped by and saw that the old pub that was part of the brewery is now going to be the restaurant Arrowood. The pub’s final day of business was July 31.

I did some digging (and legwork) and found that something called The Lift Off Lounge is moving into that ground floor space, and a familiar name is behind it, according to city paperwork: Casey Maxwell, owner of the late Matador, a West Burnside bar that was open for decades and closed in 2014.

I’m really excited to check it out and do my market shopping closer to home. Continue reading “Portland! The Rocky Butte Farmers Market is Back! This Weekend!”

Woodblock Chocolate and Their Bicerin in Portland

Great Portland food: The bicerin drink at Woodblock Chocolate in Portland, Oregon.
The bicerin drink at Woodblock Chocolate.

While running errands this past weekend, I found myself at a sign pointing to the cafe at Woodblock Chocolate, one of Portland’s bean-to-bar chocolate factories. I had heard about their cafe space but had never visited; I’m now wishing I had done it sooner. There, I had many choices of chocolate bars, caramels, truffles, and drinks to consume, but it was the bicerin that really caught my eye and made my tastebuds happy.
