This category used to feature a weekly events calendar, but that is no more. At this point it’s more about individual eventshappening in the Portland, OR area.
Got something going on? I’d still like to know about it. Submit an event, here.

After a pop-up (2018), a monthly market (2019), a COVID break (2020), and three years of weekly markets (2021 to 2023), the Rocky Butte Farmers Market returns in 2024 with another season of weekly markets—at a new location.
Those of you who have read this blog for a while know my background with CSAs—I used to help run one in Astoria, Queens for about a decade. I think they are an excellent way to access fresh, seasonal produce (and in some cases, fish, meat, dairy, grains, beans, and more) from local sources. If you are curious about or want to reconnect with a CSA (which stands for Community Supported Agriculture), the CSA Share Fair is your answer.

Over the years I’ve talked about the Galette des Rois, the king cake popular in France. This year I thought I’d expand the article on two other kinds of king cakes—the NOLA-style king cake and the Rosca de Reyes, popular in Mexico. Here’s the rundown of how to access these tasty treats in the greater Portland area.
I could hardly believe it when I read about this upcoming festival—Dongzhi: Tangyuan vs. Jiaozi—that combines dumplings and glutinous rice balls with the gorgeous Lan Su Chinese Garden. Dongzhi is the winter solstice or “Chinese Thanksgiving Day” and this celebration sounds like something great in the city of Portland.
As many of you know, I love the Rocky Butte Farmers Market and have talked about it on the blog a number of times before. The market season is over, but now ’tis the season for giving—and that includes and opportunity to support this great market serving Northeast Portland neighborhoods, outside of the active market season. To do just that, head to My-O-My this Tuesday evening for bingo night!
