Thanks to the good folks at Slow Food Portland, I’ve learned that their next Fill Your Pantry PDX Summer Pop-Up is focused on one of the most beloved summer vegetables, the tomato. I spent some time at the Fremont Fest earlier today, on a comfortable Portland summer day—cloudy and mild and without rain, the kind of weather that’s easy to spend time in. There was a generous showing of frozen treats: shave ice, gelato, kulfi, and soft serve options, which makes me think that the weather was very hot when vendor registration happened. Very happy to see that the Fremont Fest is back again this year—it’s a really fun way to celebrate this commercial/mixed strip in NE Portland neighborhoods of Beaumont-Wilshire and Cully. This past Saturday was the third installation of the 2021 season of the Rocky Butte Farmers Market, located on the Rocky Butte itself. I had attended the first market of the year but was very sick (thanks to adjusting to a new cancer drug) and couldn’t stay long; I was out of town for July’s market. So, I was really happy to be there in August—I had a great time and found some delicious and wonderful things.

As I’ve mentioned before, the Rocky Butte Farmers Market is returning this June, this time atop the actual Rocky Butte by Mannahouse Church. In anticipation of the Market, there’s been lots of strategy and planning, and one thing that has come out of the planning process is a fundraiser to support the Rocky Butte Farmers Market at Arrowood Restaurant on the evening of Monday, May 17.
