It’s all over social media today—the NY Times’ 2021 Restaurant List—and I’m thrilled for EEM and Coquine for being chosen for the list, the focus of which is “the 50 places in America we’re most excited about right now.” I love both of these places—the food is delicious and memorable, the space is comfortable, and the hospitality is excellent. Small Bites: City Permits Edition

Some of you may know that I enjoy perusing city documents to understand better what is going on in this city, especially when it comes to restaurants and real estate (I used to blog about Queens real estate many years ago). Here are some of the more interesting things I’ve come across lately in city permits land, thanks to publicly-available city documents.

World Cup Coffee and Tea House. This is the little cafe inside Powell’s Books downtown. They’ll be doing what is considered “minor tenant improvement,” which includes changing the seating area and adding a wood-slat ceiling over the reading are of the cafe. 1035 W Burnside Street, Portland

Two Future Openings: Ben & Esther’s and Nico’s Ice Cream

Two businesses beloved to many Portlanders are opening new locations: Ben & Esther’s, which opened their first bagel shop in Roseway; and Nico’s Ice Cream, a cart offering New Zealand style ice cream, along with a packaged half-pint program as well. Ben & Esther’s will open in the Alberta Arts District and Nico’s in Cully.
