Yohhei Sato, Gone Too Soon

Earlier this week I was shocked to learn of the sudden death of beloved Portland mobile knife sharpener Yohhei Sato. He sharpened knives under the name Sato Sharpening, and was beloved among so many Portlanders—chefs, food industry pros, and regular people alike. I wanted to take this space to recognize him, honor him, and express my sympathy to those who loved him.

My interactions with him were in various places around Portland, when I’d stumble upon him randomly. I remember encountering him on a particularly beautiful spring day outside of Providore (NE Sandy and 24th Ave), where he was, of course, sharpening knives. His dog, Spiky, was with him. He exuded warmth and confidence that made you feel like you could talk to him about anything. Just a really nice guy. And very talented with sharpening knives.

Spiky, for those who are concerned, is with Yohhei’s girlfriend.

The cause of death is unknown as of this writing, but he was pretty young. Below are some links where you can read about him and the respect among his fans and supporters. The social media links in particular are full of love—and heartbreak (be sure to read the comments).
