Portland! It’s where I live, work, and play. It’s where the food news happens (at least most of it). This category is one of the real constants on Bridgetown Bites and is probably a part of almost every post on this blog.
As you know from reading this blog, Frog & Snail closed earlier this year, ending easy access to crepes and the magnificent French onion meatball sub they were known for. But a new place is opening up there, Mokdong Gimbap, offering sushi and—you’d expect—especially gimbap.
As many of you know, I love the Rocky Butte Farmers Market and have talked about it on the blog a number of times before. The market season is over, but now ’tis the season for giving—and that includes and opportunity to support this great market serving Northeast Portland neighborhoods, outside of the active market season. To do just that, head to My-O-My this Tuesday evening for bingo night!
Welcome to another edition of Small Bites. Despite being away from this space, I have collected a number of tidbits elsewhere, and am essentially dropping an info load here to share with you. Enjoy!
Lawless BBQ moves into My-O-My. Monster Smash, which gave us many months of delicious smash burgers (and sandwiches and salads), has bid adieu to My-O-My in the Sumner neighborhood, and Lawless BBQ moved into that patio space in early November. Run by Kevin Koch, this is his second location. Their PR contact reached out and here’s what they are offering:
“The second Lawless Barbecue location’s menu will be distinct from the first, and will develop over time as Koch gets to know his new customers’ preferences. The new menu features smoked chicken wings and smoked ribs with a selection of sauces, and will eventually expand to include brisket and other dishes. Koch plans to tailor his recipes to suit the clientele of the My-O-My, known for its tiki-inspired cocktails and mocktails and inviting mid-century aesthetic.” Personally, I’m hoping for burnt ends, cuz I love burnt ends. 8627 NE Sandy Boulevard, Portland
Did I ever tell you that in a previous life I worked at a wholesale Madeleine bakery in Emeryville, CA? This is the brand—I spotted these at a corner store a couple blocks from where we were staying in SF in early November. You can probably get them at Peet’s or Starbucks up here.
I’ve been a big quiet here on the blog—not because of anything breast cancer-related, which has historically taken me away for extended times. It’s that … it’s been a good time to be an editor, with client copyediting taking up the bulk of my time. I also went on vacation to SF to see my favorite band pay at The Fillmore. And then I got sick from a cold virus on the flight home; I’m still recovering but definitely on the mend.
While driving along NE 82nd Avenue the other day, I noticed a new cart that has established itself on the southwest corner of NE Sandy Blvd and 82nd Avenue. It’s Masarap, “serving homemade lumpia and fresh baked goods.” A Filipino food cart? Sign me up!
