August 2026 Story Updates for Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro.

Welcome back! Here are our August 2026 story updates—who has opened, who is still getting ready to open, and who has moved.

Angelina’s. We reported on this new restaurant from the Sesame Collective folks that is opening in the old Cosube space in Slabtown. They are still working hard but have pushed their expected opening to fall 2026. I’m really looking forward to stopping in when they do open. 1580 NW 21st Avenue, Portland

Bar Scorpio. This bar from Aurelia Bardel opened on Friday, August 7. They have a mostly female bartending staff: Aurelia, Rosie, Pavel, and Mia. And yes, the hot dogs are present. Head on over and check it out. 3638 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Marée. This new restaurant from Garrett McAleese (Fantino, Kells) opened Friday, July 31, offering costal food from northern Spain and France. It is great to see that space being used again, contributing even more greatness to the vibrancy of that terrific food nexus. And, as we reported yesterday, Pamana will arrive on the scene later this year in the old Expatriate space across the street. 2930 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland

Mr. Chip. He moved! He’s been at Mike Bennett’s studio for a number of months, and now he is at Cargo, where his vending machine of hard-to-find and interesting snacks can be accessed seven days a week. Nice.

While you’re down there you can, of course, shop at Cargo, but you can also stop in at Malpractice for a drink next door or get some dumplings at Boke Bowl; Clark Lewis, Shalom Y’all, and Bunk Sandwiches are also in close proximity. 81 SE Yamhill Street, Portland

Parkrose Grocery. I reached out to Luci Moody in Council President Jamie Dunphy’s office, and she told me that the major update they have is that they are already two-thirds of the way to the fundraising goal of $30,000, having already raised over $20,000.

Parkrose Grocery has also launched a website. It’s got some good info in it, and will grow as they get closer to the anticipated opening date: Sunday, November 15. 10721 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Sazanami. This new Japanese restaurant offering omakase with a focus on sustainability and craft grand opened in Beaverton on July 29. Reservations are a must but they are so popular that there is at least a 30 day wait; likely more. Frustrating perhaps, but it warms my heart to see Beaverton and the Portland metro area embrace Hajime Sato’s work. Reminder: They do a vegan omakase, too. 10053 SW Nimbus Avenue, Beaverton

Society Pie. They successfully opened their third location on Thursday, August 6 in downtown Hillsboro where Ranch Pizza was, right next to Restaurant AMA. Interestingly enough, The Oregonian published a review of their garlic knots the Friday before our piece came out. They said this:

“The garlic knots alone were worth the trip. Invented in New York City to prevent leftover pizza dough from going to waste, the Portland-area proliferation of this appetizer has been a delight for those of us who have spent time on the east coast. Society Pie’s didn’t disappoint, and neither did the pesto dipping sauce.” 142 SE 2nd Avenue, Hillsboro

The Corner Shop. This little corner store opened Saturday, August 1 and is run by the sweetest couple, Young and Minju. Bonus: They spent some time living in my old stomping grounds of Astoria, Queens, as well as Jackson Heights (also in Queens). The Corner Shop is an independent convenience story—as much as Plaid Pantry has its place, I encourage you to stop in to The Corner Shop and give them some love. I also really liked that chocolate chip muffin I had there. 1400 E Burnside Street, Portland

The Malarkey. They had a big bash on Thursday, July 30 with like 300 people in attendance, maybe more—including Elvira, Mistress of the Dark in her normie identity! Saw some friends and colleagues and the Mayor there, didn’t get to taste much but I heard the steak and salmon was excellent. Jose “Lalo” Camarena is the chef, so it has to be good, to quote an old Smucker’s commercial. Also, big congrats to him for becoming a dad!

The Malarkey is 10,000 square feet in size with seating for 250, so it’s big; the crowds were packed in there during the soiree, so that means there were a lot of people there. For this roundup I was looking at my notes on The Malarkey and I realized I had reached out to Brian Malarkey all the way back in August 2025; we also reported on their impending arrival back at the end 2025, too.

I think it’s going to be a big draw to the area and I hope guests will have a blast. 555 NW 12th Avenue, Portland
