Many of us have been wondering what has been going on with the Chaat Wallah cart at the Upright Beer Station in Cully/Roseway. Well, wonder no more—turns out Chaat Wallah is retiring, and an outpost of DesiPDX is opening in the same cart.

Four Things I Learned This Week (April 5)

Maybe there is life for Water Avenue Coffee Hollywood after all. Over the past couple of months, I’ve seen some trucks visiting the site of a potential Water Avenue Coffee in the Hollywood District, located in the old Joule/Wholesome Blends space. And their permit situation woke up this year—the most recent one was set up in February 2023 and was “Approved to Issue” in January 2024. What’s on it? “New Tenant — Converting a restaurant to a coffee shop.” Among other more mundane things (drains, grease interceptor, grab bars in the WC). I’ll continue to keep an eye on it. 4615 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

PDX Sliders to open on N Williams. Looks like they’ll be taking over the Shine Distillery space in North Portland. Look for them to be open every day, 11am to 11pm, except Sundays when they close at 10pm. I know their website indicates a new NW Portland location but I think they will be a good fit in that hip section of North Portland. I tried to get more info this week but their email and contact form both pooped out on me. So it goes. 4232 N Williams Avenue, Portland

April is Filipino Food Month. All month long, you are encouraged to try some Filipino food, which you can find in Portland, Gresham, and Beaverton. In the words of the organizers, “To celebrate, we’re hosting Portland’s first-ever Filipino food tour called ‘Sobrang Sarap,’ which means ‘very delicious’ in Tagalog. Also: “April was designated Filipino Food Month to appreciate and preserve Filipino culinary heritage, as well as the farmers and fishermen who make it all possible.” For more information and to check out the participants, head to the Sobran Sarap website. Chaat Wallah reopens today. Lately, every time I stop in at Junior’s Roasted Coffee, I look over at the Chaat Wallah cart and wonder when they will return. Well, I no longer have to wonder: they’re back open today! Starting at 4:30pm you can get some of their delicious food from an updated menu—one item that looks really tempting is the Butter Chicken Sandwich, made with Mary’s Chicken thighs (covered in a GF dredge), chilli oil-tossed arugula, Makhani sauce, and pickled onions. You can get it on a Dos Hermanos potato bun or a New Cascadia GF bun. A cold beer from Upright Brewing would go nicely with that sandwich. 7157 NE Prescott Street, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (June 2)

Update on The Heist. Back in February I told you about The Heist, a new food cart pod opening in the old US Bank location in Woodstock. It looks like they moved in the first set of carts this week and are aiming for a Saturday, June 10 opening. I hope they can make it, though sometimes things happen beyond one’s control. They are doing their best. Looking forward to checking it out! 4727 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland

Expanded hours and more coming to Nico’s Cantina. This week Nico wrote about a bunch of changes coming to the Cantina, which all sound good but he is understandably feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. Things to look forward to: open 7 days a week; “Mezcal Monday’s,” where every bottle of Mezcal behind the bar will be 50% off; and “Taco Tuesday,” where every taco will be $1 off. These changes should be in place by Monday, June 12. 4318 NE Cully Blvd, Portland

Zuckercreme’s Strawberry Museum returns. In Montavilla, the adorable Zuckercreme is bringing back their Strawberry Museum again this year, starting tomorrow, June 3. It will last all summer. In fact, they anticipate having so much “strawberry content” (something I can get behind) that they started up the Museum’s own Instagram at @pdxstrawberrymuseum. Along with all the yums, Zuckercreme’s Brittany Sigal is looking to expand into fashion—strawberry fashion, that is, in a show on Sunday, June 25. Stop on by the shop for lots of strawberry fun. 414 SE 81st Avenue, Portland

Chaat Wallah has new hours. Looks like Chaat Wallah has settled on some new hours for their cart in the Upright/Junior’s parking lot in Cully/Roseway: Monday to Friday 3pm to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 9pm. 7 days a week! Over on Facebook, Deepak Saxena said about the turnout, “we’ve been blown away by the support and it’s been way beyond what we expected.” All good news. 7157 NE Prescott Street, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (May 12)

Chaat Wallah cart opens today at 3pm. Over on their Instagram, the Chaat Wallah folks wrote, “This a secret just between us but you’ll be able to enjoy our nacho chaat and other goodies this Friday starting at 3pm. We’re planning on being open all weekend unless we just run out of food because you don’t keep this a secret.” PDX Eater also wrote an article on the opening of the cart, which will be adjacent to Upright Brewing and Junior’s in Cully/Roseway. Among the offerings will be a “spiced lamb smash burger with buttermilk curry, garlic chile crisp, and pickled eggplant puree.” There will be vegetarian options, too. Check it out!  7151 NE Prescott Street, Portland

Sebastiano’s has gotten themselves a second location. In an email, Dan and Elise at Sebastiano’s revealed they now have a second location (it seems the Montavilla location will remain). The main activity there will be to be their commercial kitchen, which will support their presence at the Sellwood and Woodstock farmers markets.

The ability to eat there is also in the future plans: “Over time, we hope to build out the adjoining space to create a dining area and open the space to the public. We are hesitant to put a date on it, but it feels like a good Fall project to get going on the buildout. In the meantime, you can find Sebastiano’s at the Sellwood Farmers Market which starts this Saturday!” Congrats, Dan and Elise! 8235 SE 13th Avenue, Portland

Jerusalem Rose Market to close and adjust. This week, I learned that the Jerusalem Rose Market, a place that celebrates SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa) food and supports the Center for Study & Preservation of Palestine, “will not be able to go on as it is right now past this month.” The reasons? One, it has to do with money: “the financial goals have just not panned out.” And two, the fact that “[they] cannot continue to produce our prepared foods at the rate that the market requires.” There is a lot of demand. They will close the store Sunday, May 28. Read more about their plans, here. 2948 NE Martin Luther King Blvd, Portland

Milo’s City Cafe has closed temporarily. The O has reported that over on NE Broadway, Milo’s City Cafe, “known for its smoked salmon eggs Benedict and chicken and waffles topped with fried leeks,” has temporarily closed. A sign on the door says “Look for us to reopen soon.” Michael Russell mentions the closing of Zell’s in the article, which is a bummer, though I know there are mixed feelings about what Zell’s became after some revamps. I did miss the scones. Anyway, here’s to Milo’s opening sooner rather than later. 1325 NE Broadway, Portland

Chaat Wallah Cart to Join Upright Brewing in Cully

I was wandering around the internet this morning and landed on Chaat Wallah’s website. Chaat Wallah is a project from Deepak Saxena and the DesiPDX folks that serves “fun fusion reinterpretations of Indian street food.” In small type toward the bottom of the website is written “coming to Cully in 2022.” Of course my curiosity was piqued.
