Water Avenue Coffee Is Opening a New Cafe in the Hollywood District

When I was driving home from my first post-COVID massage this afternoon, I glanced over at the old Joule space on NE Sandy and 46th Ave and saw a sign installed indicating Water Avenue Coffee is opening a new cafe there. I’m really glad to see that something is being done with that space; it has been vacant for too long.

In the brief look I got of the place, it appears that they still have some work to do inside before they can open. They posted a barista job listing on Poached about a couple of weeks ago, so they are definitely getting closer to opening. My hope is that The Whole Bowl will be able to continue operating out of the adjacent space, too.

Water Avenue is one of my favorite cafes in Portland. Their coffee is delicious and I once had a memorable iced tea there called Green Dream, made with a vanilla green tea, lemonade and vanilla syrup. I like to stop in at their flagship cafe over on Water Street when I’m in the Central Eastside area.

The arrival of Water Avenue in the northeast corner of the Hollywood District is pretty exciting. They’ll join nearby Bitter Rose Coffee Bar by the library, and Case Study just up Sandy Blvd in Rose City Park in bringing high quality coffee culture to the neighborhood. Back before the new location was Joule Crafted Nutrition, it was Wholesome Blends, a little indie coffee spot that closed down in late 2017. I mentioned then about their “genius practices of iced coffee—use ice cubes made from coffee so that the drink never dilutes.” I still think that’s such a great idea (thank you, Zell’s, for keeping this tradition going).

So keep an eye on this location for Water Avenue—Hollywood District’s grand opening. Here hoping it’s going to happen before the end of summer.

    1. I was at the flagship shop over in the Central Eastside a couple weeks ago and asked about the Hollywood location. They (the baristas) punted, said they don’t get that kind of info from management. I did notice on the website recently that down in the footer where “Locations” are, that any copy about “Hollywood coming soon” is no longer there. It is possible it is still in the works after all these months (see: Trela), but good chance the project is kaput. I wish I had better, more informative news.
