Scenes From Fremont Fest 2021

I spent some time at the Fremont Fest earlier today, on a comfortable Portland summer day—cloudy and mild and without rain, the kind of weather that’s easy to spend time in. There was a generous showing of frozen treats: shave ice, gelato, kulfi, and soft serve options, which makes me think that the weather was very hot when vendor registration happened. It’s been a while! I’ve been working hard to improve some health issues, which have really been a buzzkill for this blog. But my curiosity about Portland food got the better of me, and I took a review of my regular sources for things that interest me. Here’s what I found.

Filipino (food) popup at the Side Yard Farm Friday. An enticing-sounding popup at the Side Yard Farm in Cully featuring Filipino businesses is happening this Friday, August 6. Among others, vegan bakery Kumare will be participating and offering “our mini ube ensaymada as well as NEW all plant-based Filipino goodies such as Biko (coconut rice cake), Turon (fried banana rolls), and Cantaloupe Juice.” No pre-order necessary. 5-9pm. 4800 NE Simpson Street, Portland

Rosebridge Coffee Opens Inside Fairley’s Pharmacy

For many months now there has been speculation as to whether or not Fairley’s Pharmacy would open their soda fountain back up; I believe it closed down because of the pandemic. Good news—it’s back open and is under a new name: Rosebridge Coffee.

Holler for Ice Cream

Holler, a new spot coming to Sellwood from Doug Adams and Jen Quist of Bullard, has gotten a lot of good press lately—Eater and Vogue, for starters. They hype the fried chicken, and kid-friendly space with arcade games. A recent liquor license application from Holler indicates another detail: a 35-seat ice cream shop operating under the name Lucky You Cold Treats.

Their Instagram indicates a Spring 2020 opening, so we’ll find out more sooner than later. Holler, 7119 SE Milwaukie Ave, Portland
