YUI, a Returning Thai Restaurant, Opens in 2026 in Portland

Good news: YUI, the celebrated Thai restaurant from Chalunthorn “Yui” Schaeffer, is reopening in the new year. They will occupy the space that Musashi’s Sushi and Teriyaki Grill held for about five years on SE Belmont. I had heard so many wonderful things about Yui’s work in the past, that I wanted to have a chat to find out more about this next phase in restaurants for her. Here is what I learned.

Nosh at The Noshpit in the Old Backyard Social Space in Portland

Back at the end of September I learned that a new bar/restaurant was planned for what was home to Backyard Social for many years. Called The Noshpit, they look to offer sandwiches, soup, hot dogs, drinks, and more. I spoke with the owner of The Noshpit, Jeff Jones, the other day about the new place, and here is what I learned.

Mayger Coffee Will Open in the Madison South Neighborhood in Portland

Last month I meet up with Arlen Kallunki, who is opening Mayger Coffee in the southwestern corner of the Madison South neighborhood. He’s taking over the space that used to be home to a Vientamese bakery and deli called TM Banh Mi. We met up at Futura Coffee on NE Glisan and had a very nice chat about the new cafe. Mako Matcha Mill Will Indeed Mill Matcha in Portland

Mako Matcha Mill is a new matcha cafe and mill coming to Southwest Portland’s West End section—and true to their name, they will be milling matcha there on site. I stopped by the cafe the other day (under construction at the time) and spoke with the two owners, Edison Zeng and Emily Dewey, to hear about their work with matcha and their plans for the cafe. Here is what I learned.

(Bonus: I had my first taste ever of Nong’s Khao Man Gai’s chicken and rice, located right across the street).
