I noticed a liquor license application posted for Ora et Labora this week, and I have to admit—I was enticed by its mellifluous name. According to the website, Ora et Labora plans a fall 2022 opening or a December 2022 opening, depending on the source, located on that hip strip of businesses on N Williams (think EEM, Eat: An Oyster Bar, Crisp Salads, etc).

5. Maeve, a Coffee and Wine Bar, Opens in Sellwood This Spring
A new coffee and wine bar called Maeve is coming to the Westmoreland section of Sellwood. It’s going to be run by two sisters, Amanda and Kendra Stark, who have experience in the world of counseling. Amanda’s husband, Richard Forrest Mavis (software developer and former owner of Gigantic Gallery in NW Portland), may also be involved. They hope to open in April.

Back in October 2021 I caught wind of Grinds & Vines, a Black-owned coffee and wine bar, opening up in the Hazelwood/Parkrose Heights area in east Portland. The good folks from Rocky Butte Coffee Roasters were helping them out with a coffee tasting, and it sounded like a lot of fun. It’s going to be run by Donna and Leroy Barber (of Black Santa fame) at 10632 NE Halsey Street.

Some of the things you’ll find at Maeve
Earlier this year I wrote about Maeve, a coffee and wine bar in Sellwood with a projected April 2022 opening. Well, that target has been met and they are opening this month—a soft opening Friday, April 8 starting at 7am; opening day is Thursday, April 14 (also at 7am), with a grand opening party on Saturday, April 16 from 4-8pm.
