A number of factors went into January’s traffic, including being linked to by PDX Eater and Willamette Week. Facebook is another solid referrer. I’m grateful to the editors at Eater and WW for their linkage. And thanks, as always, to you for reading! Here are the posts you all read the most in January 2022.
5. The Jolly Roger Will Be Demolished

This week I learned that Jolly Roger, a “long time Buckman den of fun and frolic” (thank you, Buckman Community Association) will be demolished. What’s coming in its place? Housing.
4. Dumpling Week 2022 – the Offerings

Last month I wrote up a post that Portland’s Dumpling Week is returning in 2022 and how restaurants could participate. I have been eagerly waiting to learn more about the participating spots—and they are finally here! I think this may be my favorite Dumpling Week I’ve seen, yet. Here are the participants and their offerings.
3. Greasers Cafe, a 50s-Style Diner, Will Open in St. Johns [NB: the new name is Rockabilly Cafe, hence the image difference.]

The St. John’s neighborhood is getting a new eatery—Greasers Cafe, a 50s-style diner. It looks like they’ll be taking over the space that Chop St. Johns (famous for their sandwiches) has been in for about 3 years.
2. Gabbiano’s Will Open on 30th Ave Near NE Killingsworth

The area where NE 30th Ave intersects with NE Killingsworth has been home to many delicious places over the years. And a new Italian-American restaurant and bar, Gabbiano’s, will be joining the area, likely in January 2022. It will become the southern neighbor to Ripe Cooperative and will offer good food in a fun atmosphere. “Gabbiano” means “seagull” in Italian.
1. Boozy Brunch Spot Flattop & Salamander Opening in the Buckman Neighborhood

Back in 2018, we learned about Flattop & Salamander, a brunch spot that was to open in the Lents neighborhood that September. Fast forward to 2022 and you should see them open in the Buckman neighborhood with a cocktail-heavy menu and brunch stalwarts like french toast and biscuits & gravy.
I’ll take this opportunity to say Happy Lunar New Year today! This is big deal in many cultures in and around the continent of Asia. There are lots of good things to eat, especially dumplings and noodles. The celebration lasts 15 days.
And Valentine’s Day is coming up—we’ve got a whole post dedicated to Valentine’s Day options in the area where you can celebrate with the one(s) you love. Reservations could go fast at some places (the pandemic makes things feel a little unpredictable), so conventional wisdom is get yours set sooner than later. We’ll be updating that post for the next couple weeks as info gets to us and things change.
