Maeve, a Coffee and Wine Bar, Opens in Sellwood This Spring

A new coffee and wine bar called Maeve is coming to the Westmoreland section of Sellwood. It’s going to be run by two sisters, Amanda and Kendra Stark, who have experience in the world of counseling. Amanda’s husband, Richard Forrest Mavis (software developer and former owner of Gigantic Gallery in NW Portland), may also be involved. They hope to open in April.

The location was previously home to Buttercraft, which the NY Times highlighted in a 2019 article on Sellwood. Buttercraft had been around since 2015, offering wine, “farmstead cheese, local meats, artisan chocolates, our own handcrafted butters.” They had in-person events pre-pandemic, so the space should be conducive to this new coffee/wine bar setup from Maeve.

Along with the coffee and wine there will be food—in what form remains to be seen (small plates? little nibbles? cheese and charcuterie?). They plan to have 10 seats indoors, 20 outdoors. Live music seems to be in the works, too, for Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, in the late afternoon (4pm) to the moderate evening hour (9pm).

They’ll be open seven days a week, starting at 7am and ending at 11pm.

They’ve got a good amount of time before their planned opening, and already they are adding attractive design elements: a beautiful chandelier and a cloud mural on one wall, painted by local artist Adam Salazar. I’m eager to see what kind of furniture they bring in and get the feel of the overall vibe. It could be pretty sweet.

Good luck to the Stark sisters as they put Maeve together for a spring opening.
