Montesacro Has Closed

I ate this pinsa soon after they opened in 2019.

I learned over the weekend that Montesacro, an Italian restaurant in the Pearl that served pinsa, a “precursor to the pizza,” has closed. They opened in late 2018. A note about the closing was spotted on the restaurant’s front door on Friday, March 25:

Dear Montesacro Family,
Thank you for 3 great years in The Pearl! We’ve loved sharing food, wine, and good times together. While our Portland chapter has come to a close, you can still visit our locations in San Francisco + Brooklyn.
We are grateful to you, our dear customers, for all of the support you’ve given.

It’s nice that you can still access their food in SF and Brooklyn, but I’m very sorry to see them leave Portland. I took friends there and always enjoyed the food. The pinsa was very tasty and its shape made it easy to cut and share. I also loved their antipasti that were combinations of various fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Their Cavolfiori was particularly good: roasted cauliflower at the center, with olives, tomato, hot chili, and breadcrumbs.

Cavolfiori—always savory, always good.

Now, why they closed could be attributed to a variety of things—the pandemic’s economics; slowing foot traffic in the Pearl because of the condition of the neighborhood’s streets; increasing crime city-wide. I hope the reason behind it is something mundane and not tragic.

I’m grateful they were here serving delicious food in Portland for as long as they did. I will miss them. And I’ll repeat my plea to the powers-that-be in Portland city government: do more to keep our restaurants up and running and healthy in this town. The closings are heartbreaking; the city can do better.
