Nectar Cafe Has (Kind Of) Closed

In the “I’m Late to the Party” category, I only recently learned this weekend that Nectar Cafe has closed—at least the cafe as it has been. I was over in the Hollywood District yesterday and saw the signs up. They closed their doors on December 18, 2022 (one day before they planned to).

The cafe had been there for almost a decade and provided tasty vegan food and drink, plus they would feature the work of local artists on the walls. Back in fall of 2019 Nectar expanded next door—oh those heady pre-pandemic times—and it all seemed to be going well.

They posted this note on their door, and also on social media:

To all our Nectar family

We are sad to announce that after nearly 10 years, Nectar as you know it has reached the end of its run. This quirky little cafe has always had its challenges, and as hard as we’ve pushed and tried to adapt, we just can’t keep doing things the way we’ve been doing them. It’s time for a big change. December 19th will be our last day of regular service, at which point we will take a pause and re-envision the business from the ground up.

You—the Nectar community—has always been the beating heart of this business. Over and over again, you were the “why” that kept us coming back despite every curveball this industry has thrown our way. So please, do not hesitate to reach out with questions, comments, or ideas to move forward.

Thank you to each and every customer, staff member, artist, and vendor we have worked with over the last nine and a half years. It was such a special time, and we couldn’t have done it without you. We hope you’ll come by and send us—at least this version of us—off well.

Ellison, Natasha, and the Nectarines

I enjoyed going there when I lived in the neighborhood, but I will admit: I did not stop by as much after I moved. I loved their juices and especially their tofu bahn mi sandwich over the years.

It sounds like, though, that they are going to figure out how to be Nectar but in a different form. Another posted note says, “We will be holding onto the space and would like to focus on music, community events, and catering.” Sounds like some of the things that have piqued their interest include co-working, commissary/delivery kitchen, pop-ups, and private parties. If you have interest in any of these things, send them an email at nectarcafepdx@gmail.com.

I wish the folks at Nectar only the best as they take a breath and figure out what’s next.

  1. Bummer. Yet another closure in beleaguered Hollywood. The clothing store Reagan’s boutique in the same group of stores has been robbed and vandalized multiple times. So sorry to see the negative impacts of Portland lawlessness on small businesses.

    1. Reagan’s is a great clothing store and I’m sorry to hear she has had a bunch of break-ins. I’ve been keeping an intermittent eye on the old Blackwell’s and Magnolia spaces but nothing seems to be happening there. I’m particularly sad about Magnolia closing, a victim of the pandemic. That was a really nice place with tasty vegan food (this coming from an omnivore) and drink.
