An example of Chicken Pho Phở Gà (shredded chicken with rice noodles in chicken broth) from Hà VL, sister to the new Annam VL.
You may know that Hà VL and Rose VL are some of the most beloved Vietnamese restaurants in Portland. Hà VL was nominated for a James Beard award in 2020 in the Outstanding Restaurant category (keep track of their soups on the Hà VL Daily Soups page; Rose VL is well-known for its cao lầu. So it’s very exciting to tell you that they are opening a third restaurant in Portland, called Annam VL, in the Belmont neighborhood this fall.
I came upon their Instagram post yesterday with the announcement: “Ha VL will be opening its third sister restaurant in SE Belmont. The new restaurant will be operated by the family of Phuong La-Vuong and Han Vuong, son of the late Christina Luu.”
They will be offering soups, of course, including “unfamiliar regional soups” they have enjoyed in their family. I’m also looking forward to this: “Alongside our soups, we want to showcase small street food dishes throughout the seasons.”
As for when they are opening, it’s a kind of vague “fall 2023” but it looks like they still have some work to do on the space to get it ready for the way they’d like to present the restaurant. The location, 3336 SE Belmont, was most recently home to Batterfish, which has closed.
Best of luck to the Annam VL folks as they work on the space and get ready to give Portland what will no doubt be something truly delicious.
