Hummus Vitality Opening in Argay Terrace

A Bridgetown Bites tipster emailed me the following: “Neighborhood rumour has it that the people who run Nicholas Restaurant … are in the process of opening a new restaurant – Hummus Vitality.” I love the food at Nicholas—and flavor profiles from the Middle East—so this was welcome news to me. I did some poking around and this is what I found. Note: This article includes some updates as of February 22.

The location of Hummus Vitality, which will serve “Lebanese and Mediterranean Cuisine,” is on the west side of the Sandy Plaza, a strip mall in Argay Terrace known in part for the accolades heaped upon the Sandy Hot Wings Café by PoMo a couple of years ago. You can find their popular hot wings in the cafe located in a separate building on the east side of Sandy Plaza. Along with the hot wings cafe, there’s also a church, a cell phone store, massage parlor, Plaid Pantry, and a few other things in this strip mall on NE Sandy Blvd.

Additionally, Sandy Plaza has been home to Double Pepper (fun fact: according to their sign, it’s plural “peppers”; according to their menu, it’s singular “pepper”; I’ll go with singular pepper in this article), a Chinese restaurant that opened in 2017 and shuttered in the not so distant past. Yelper Michael K. posted on December 11, 2023: “No longer serving Chinese food. The new owner is remodeling and will open soon with Middle Eastern food.” That remodeled restaurant would be Hummus Vitality.

Lina Estefan, who I found is connected to the Nicholas Restaurant on NE Broadway in Portland via ORSOS paperwork, satisfied the “people who run Nicholas” connection. Additionally, I’ve recently learned that she and her husband Ziad Khouri are the people behind Hummus Vitality. And he is also the owner of … Nicholas on NE Broadway. Also, I was unaware that the NE Broadway Nicholas and the SE Madison and Gresham Nicholas restaurants are owned by someone else. It’s interesting to see the connections.

Hoping all is going well at Hummus Vitality—this really is a great addition to the neighborhood.
