The Mule Bar Opens This Week

Late last week a Bridgetown Bites tipster reached out to inform me that The Mule Bar—the new bar opening in the old Stanich’s space on NE Fremont Street in Cully—will open their doors officially on Friday, February 2 (date updated this morning). There will be a soft opening on Wednesday, January 31. Hot dog!

True, I’ve been a bit preoccupied with the Sandy Jug Tavern opening today as far as bar openings go, but this news about The Mule Bar is excellent. I’m really glad new life will flow through this location. Along with the news about the opening date, I’ve also learned that they’ve somewhat updated the space (the pennants remain).

The Green Dog Pet Supply Instagram posted more photos of the interior, one of which you can see above; the rest are here.

Both the tipster and a comment in the Facebook “Stanich’s Lovers” group indicates that they are trying to recreate the famous Stanich’s burger; it will likely cost $17, including sides. There’s a good chance it will taste a lot like the original (a Stanich family member passed on the recipe to the new owners), but like grandma’s recipes go, sometimes she’s the only one who can make it taste “like it should.” I look forward to reading reviews on the similarities. (I never had the Stanich burger, so I have no reference point.)

Additionally, I’ve read this will not be a place for minors, and another source says that video poker and a pool table will be available. As for when The Mule Bar will be open, my previous article indicated their hours are 11am to midnight daily, both inside and outdoors (shutting things down at 9:30pm). These were the hours submitted with their liquor license application.

There is virtually no online presence for The Mule Bar at the writing of this article—no social media or website that I can find. The ORSOS docs are online and there is a parked website of themulebar.com as a Wix site (this may or may not belong to The Mule Bar), but that’s about it [Update: This is the correct website for the bar.]. That may change, however, as time goes on. Like it or not, it’s more challenging to run a business these days if you’re not on some kind of social media.

All the best to The Mule Bar as they open this week!

  1. We are very excited to have The Mule Bar bring life back to 4915! They have honored our family and our history!

  2. Was there from 8-10 pm. Had no idea it was so very new.
As a local resident I am biased, but know that the service was excellent. Best wishes and I will visit again soon.

  3. My husband and i were looking forward to trying out The Mule Bar tonight and were so very disappointed in it. They were not busy and yet we were never waited on. The server gave us our menus but never came back to take our order. She talked a lot with the few people at the bar but after waiting 20 minutes we left. We won’t be back.

    1. Very sorry to hear you had this experience. I’ve been in your shoes – there is a restaurant in Portland (I will not share the name here) where the staff didn’t even talk to us, despite our sitting down very close to the bar in a small-ish space, for about 20 minutes. We have not been back. We will likely give them another chance sometime in the future, but we don’t know when.
