It looks like, according to documents filed with the city of Portland, that Roseburg-based small-batch meadery, Oran Mor Artisan Mead, is coming to Portland, opening a location in the Sellwood neighborhood on SE 13th Avenue.
About Oran Mor Artisan Mead
This award-winner meadery was established in southern Oregon in 2015. Mead, often referred to as “honey wine” (because honey is used in the fermentation process, as opposed to grapes), is an ancient beverage, considered the earliest kind of alcoholic drink humans enjoyed, thousands of years before wine.
Oran Mor Artisan Mead describes their mead work: “Oran Mor combines fresh Umpqua Valley and Pacific Northwest Fruit with Apiary Direct Local and Varietal Honeys to create unique and delicious libations that will challenge you to redefine everything you think you know about Meads and Honey Wines.” Along with the aformentioned PNW fruit, their mead is blended with herbs, and spices to create a variety of beverages.
If you’re curious to try their meads in Portland today, you can purchase them at the shops listed on their website.
At Oran Mor Artisan Mead’s Roseburg location they do a lot of events, and it looks like that will continue up here, too, at least in the form of live music. That will happen Wednesdays through Sundays. To start, the meadery will be open daily from 11am to 10pm on those days.
Oran Mor’s New Portland Location
I learned a little bit about the space itself. The building is owned by Corey Guidry of Sellwood Union Vintage; they are a vintage vendor collective. The Loopnet listing describes the space as “mystical” and a:
“Charming and rustic ‘speakeasy’ space with private mysterious iron gate entry. Full wrap around outdoor deck under beautiful cherry trees for outdoor dining or assembly. 4 separate room spaces, one underground … Full roofed outdoor permit, a 3000 dollar plus value, included. Please come with a plan.”
The listing continues with “We are looking for someone who wants to respect, develop and beautify the space. We are local and we prefer a local company, startup or band of merry kooks. I imagine that Oran Mor is in alignment with this philosophy.
More Information? Delayed, but Yes
I reached out to Lilly Weichberger, the head mead maker, earlier this week for more info. Unfortunately, I never heard from her. So it goes.
Update: April 7, 2025: They soft-opened their Sellwood meadery in late March, with a grand opening scheduled for May. It is staffed by some folks from their already established location, and some new people.
“This tasting room will have a brand new menu with delicious food to pair with our Mead,” was posted on Instagram. They don’t have the full menu on the website, but do have some food photos, which you can see here. Photos on Instagram also indicate cured meats, cheese, and fruit as options, as well as panini and tapas.
