A reader emailed me with the news that Portland’s excellent Balkan restaurant, Two Brothers Rakia Bar + Grill, is for sale. Color me surprised—I had no idea this was in the works until then. This could be a blow to the diversity—and deliciousness—of the Portland food scene. But the reason why they are selling is understandable.
Earlier in August, a Yelper posted the following: “Oh no—I just read that they will sell the restaurant due to retirement of the parents.” I reached out to the restaurant to learn more, and heard from Vladan, one of the titular “two brothers”—who confirms that his parents are selling the business.
He wrote, “Yes, my parents have decided to put it up for sale. Neither my younger brother nor I want to take over the business and my parents want to retire, so that is reason it’s up for sale.”
I also learned that they opened Two Brothers 18 years ago, and have been working really hard there during that entire time. And now, it’s time for them to step away and retire, which is fair.
Vladan also told me that next week they will close down the restaurant for a month, so that his parents can go on vacation back in the Balkans. When they come back Thursday, October 10 they will reopen Two Brothers and continue to work until they sell it. “We are not sure how long that will take, could be a few months or could be a year maybe even longer, ” he explained. “We will stay open during the sales process.”
The aforementioned Yelper also said this: “Now it’s up to us all to make sure they earn as much money as possible for Retirement so please visit them as long as they are still open.” I have to agree here—if you are looking for excellent, authentic food from the Balkans, head here. But call first to confirm they are open on the day you want to stop by.
Here’s hoping that whoever buys the restaurant will continue offering this great food from the Balkans at the high level we are used to. Many thanks to Vladan’s parents for creating such an excellent place to enjoy this food in Portland for so many years.
