I thought I’d take a little time to share some of the restaurants opening in Portland in 2025 that I am particularly looking forward to. As we move further away from the pandemic—though COVID is not gone, by any means—I have hopes that its volatility that affected the city’s restaurants for too long is truly in the rearview mirror. And that other issues (like break-ins) can be addressed by our new city council. This year’s list includes a public market, a new coffee shop, Indigenous fine dining, and more.
First, Did Our 2024 Picks Open?
First, I thought I’d look at my list for 2024 (written at the end of 2023). The four places have indeed opened and seem to be doing well. The Sandy Jug opened in January, Sebastiano’s re-opened at their new Sellwood location in March (btw, they recently brought back their excellent ricotta cake), Vivienne re-opened on NE Alberta Street in April, and Tréla opened in December—just under the year-end line.
It’s been great to see these places open and thrive, and I wish them many years of lifespan and good business.
Now for 2025’s Future Openings
Here are some of the things I’m looking forward to when it comes to eating and drinking in this town in 2025.
James Beard Public Market
The opening of the James Beard Public Market will mark the return of a public market—much like what you’ll find in Philadelphia and San Francisco—to Portland. They’ve got their funding in the right place, a location, plans, and a lot of excitement. Look for their phase one opening in fall 2025 in downtown Portland. SW 6th and Alder (622 SW Alder), Portland
Flock Food Hall
After many months of wondering, last week we received the news that the opening date of the Flock Food Hall is going to be Sunday, February 2—Groundhog Day. This is the food hall that will be located at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. I’ll be curious how it is received, as this food hall will sit on what was home to a popular food cart pod before the Ritz opened there. 917 SW Alder Street, Portland
99 Ranch Market
It seems like their new East Portland location (currently they are local only in Beaverton) is taking forever to open. But logic dictates that it would open this year and not next year. It will be a great supermarket alternative to the Kroger or Albertsons coverage in Portland. I’m really looking forward to stopping in, dawdling through the aisles, and bringing delicious things home with me. 10548 SE Washington Street, Portland
Two Food Cart Pods: Brooklyn Carreta and Fremont Garage
I toured Brooklyn Carreta last year an was impressed with their plans for the old La Carreta space. It’s going to be a great spot in SE Portland, with a big bar, indoor and outdoor spaces, and a nice selection of carts. In NE Portland, what was the location of an old auto garage will turn into a pod now called Fremont Garage. It will serve as a community space, too, as there really isn’t much of that kind of thing in this section of Beaumont-Wilshire. 4534 SE McLoughlin Blvd and 4403 NE Fremont Street, Portland
Parkrose Coffee Shop
Glad to see this new coffee shop getting ready to open in the Parkrose neighborhood. They are working hard to get the space ready to open, from applying a fresh coat of paint inside, to getting together the menu, and more. They hope to open in March. 4826 NE 105th Avenue, Portland
Pleasure Mountain
Already in their soft opening phase, I am planning on stopping in soon. Pleasure Mountain is a new cocktail bar focusing on Indian spirits and cocktails (there are mocktails, too), along with a curated food menu featuring tastes and flavors from throughout India. Few, if any, other places focus on Indian cocktails and it’s a pretty exciting addition to the Portland drinking scene. 5513 NE 30th Avenue, Portland
Yum’s of PDX
While I wasn’t able to pin her down for an interview last year, there’s a lot of great info already online about Yum’s of PDX, a new pizzeria opening in the Buckman neighborhood. Miriam Weiskind, who is the pizzaiola at Yum’s of PDX (she’s also known as The Za Report). She recently posted on Instagram that she now has an oven, which is a major step for any pizzeria. It is a wood/gas combo Acunto 130; read more about it on her Instagram. Look for a March or April opening. 830 SE 8th Avenue, Portland
Portland Mercado (Re-Opening)
A kitchen fire caused the Market Hall section of this food cart pod to burn down in early January 2024. Now, plans are set to re-open it by the end of the year. From their Instagram: “The new Mercado will feature a second-floor bar, enhanced commercial spaces and a revamped food truck plaza with covered seating. The rebuild is expected to take approximately six months, with construction slated to begin by mid-2025, contingent on permits and funding.” 7238 SE Foster Road, Portland
Inɨ́sha
I’m excited and intrigued by the idea of Indigenous fine dining. This new restaurant (Inɨ́sha means “my daughter” in the Yakama Tribal Language) is brought to us by the folks at Javelina. Also: “The menu will be dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and Cane sugar-free and only source proteins native to this continent, this means no Pork, Chicken, or Beef instead we will use Wild Boar, Bison, Duck, Goose, Rabbit & Tribal Caught Fish.” The first service will be Saturday, February 8. 5425 NE 30th Avenue, Portland

There is no way the Mercado reopens this year.
Good chance, but they are optimistic they will be done by end of year, so I’m going with it.
Toro closed. I hope to hear Mingo reopening this year.
Thanks, John – also glad to hear Toro’s closure is just temporary as they “reimagine” the space and update the menu. Thanks for letting me know about Toro!
Unfortunately, Caffe and Bar Mingo are not reopening.
