New food menu at Leikam Brewing. They’ve partnered with Nourishment PDX, which provides locally-sourced, flavorful food. A little backstory: “The two first crossed paths nearly a decade ago as vendors at the Hollywood Farmers Market and are excited to reconnect. Ramona White, founder of Nourishment PDX, was a beloved presence at the market for 19 years, serving tens of thousands of her famous breakfast burritos to customers of all ages and Leikam sold its first beers publicly at the market weekly.”
You can see their menu here, which includes mac & cheese, a mezze plate, lamb chorizo chili, deviled eggs, and more. The full menu is available 4pm to 8pm, with a modified menu after 8pm. 5812 East Burnside Street, Portland
The Paladins League does brunch. This family-friendly tabletop and RPG game space on NE Fremont is doing brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. You can order waffles, biscuits, breakfast burritos, avocado toast, mimosas, coffee and more. 4765 NE Fremont Street, Portland
Hit the Spot levels up their beef. This local burger joint now uses not only grass-fed beef, but beef that is grass-finished, too. From their social media: “We are now using 100% Grass Fed, Grass Finished Beef for our burgers! Each patty is about 1oz larger too. We are on a mission to offer 100% ‘farm-to-table’ burgers and fries and this is one step closer!” 676 SE Morrison Street, Portland
Oran Mor’s Portland meadery is now open. I was happy to see this place we reported on last spring has indeed opened in Sellwood. And this weekend they are focusing on their VIPs—“all of our friends who have been with us since the beginning” and inviting them to come by. I am sure if you just discovered Oran Mor, they would not turn you away, unless it’s Sunday, which will be devoted to their Mead Club members.
They are also doing some theme days this weekend: today (Friday) is Pirate day, Saturday is Renfaire and Fae Folk—come in costume! They will have special pairings available throughout the weekend and live music on Saturday from 5-7pm with Hannah. Their grand opening is planned for May. 8011 SE 13th Avenue, Portland
Landing Paper Planes has secured a location. This project—pay-what-you-can cafe by day, fine dining by night, run by industry pros—has a location! Landing Paper Planes will be setting up shop in the old Bee’s Cakes space there on the corner of NE Sandy Blvd and Fremont Street. I sure miss Rebecca and her wonderful baked goods but this new venture is a great successor to this lovely spot. Congrats, guys! 7137 NE Fremont Street, Portland
Tikka Shots, opening soon. A new Indian fusion restaurant called Tikka Shots is opening up on the northwest corner of 5th and Taylor downtown. It’s in the same building the Duniway Hotel is in, next to Glowing Greens, and the space used to be a Qdoba. There’s not much out there online about them, but here’s a video that shows some of the dishes they will offer, and the general vibe. 505 SW Taylor Street, Portland
Bollywood Theater is closing on Division. They’ve been on SE Division for 11 years and are closing down that location this month. The final day will be Saturday, April 19. The reason? “This was not an easy decision. A lingering hangover from Covid really. Every restaurant has been affected in some way and for us it’s eventually led to a necessary change.” But, they will stay open on NE Alberta.
And on Alberta they will expand their hours and that means they’ll be adding lunch service, 7 days a week. They also mentioned that they are not totally leaving the SE Division location but are opening a casual Italian restaurant and market in there this summer. 3010 SE Division Street, Portland
Nectaris Wine Bar has opened in the old Fermenter space. I received a press release this week about Nectaris Wine Bar, which offers “premium wines paired with plant-based comfort classics at everyday prices.” Glass pours of wine for $15 and under are of particular interest and they look forward to bringing those to their guests.
The proprietress Beverly McKenzie—aka “Nectaris Adoris”—really wants you to feel at home there, enjoying good wine and delicious vegan food. She has a longtime friendship with Aaron Adams, who runs Astera next door, and they share a deep love and interest in plant-forward fare. You’ll find them Thursday through Sunday right now; they have future plans to add service on Monday. Drop-ins are welcome. Reservations are encouraged. 1403 SE Belmont Street, Portland
Goodbye ChiMcking, hello Pho Han. ChiMcking, the Korean fried chicken chain, has closed their NE MLK location. In its place will be Pho Han—and they have registered their business as Pho Han and Deli, so sounds like they’ll have some grab and go things, too (thinking like the HOB/House of Banh Mi). For those that love ChiMcking, there’s still a location in the Hollywood District, and in Beaverton. 7339 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland
Tasting Thursdays at Oak Tree Station. I just was made aware of this weekly event at the Oak Tree Station food cart pod in Camas, WA. Each Thursday you can try dishes from multiple carts for $5 each. This is a nice way to try some new-to-you things at this substantial pod that is surprisingly close to Portalnd. 5900 NW Friberg-Strunk Street, Camas WA

Tokyo Sando wins! This popular food truck at the Midtown Beer Garden has won the “Public’s Favorite Food Cart in Portland” competition from the pdx.eats Instagram account. Big congrats to the Taiki Nakajima and the Tokyo Sando team! Props also to Matt’s BBQ, Golden Triangle, and Sure Shot Burgers for making a great stand, too. 431 SW Harvey Milk Street, Portland
XLB’s final days are now. Head there for XLBs, bao, noodles and other Chinese comfort food before they’re gone forever—Sunday, April 20 is their final day of service. You can see their final schedule on their Instagram. Sorry to see them leave. 4090 N Williams Avenue, Portland
Score: A Baker Fair wants you, bakers. This new event is happening Sunday, June 8 and celebrates Portland’s independent bakers. It’s going be great for attendees, but if you are an independent baker and interested in participating, you could consider participating! The organizers describe it as an opportunity, “where you can meet local artisans, shop freshly baked goods, and experience the magic of community through food.”
If you bake bread, pastries and everything in between, they welcome you. Head to their Instagram and send them a DM for more information.
Upright Brewing celebrates 10 years of collaboration with the artist Lloyd. They’ll be celebrating at the Upright Beer Station on Saturday, April 19, so save the date. From 6pm to 9pm, @sonoflloyd, who creates the labels and logos for Upright, will be around. From 7pm to 7:30pm he will give “a brief presentation about [their] partnership and discuss some of the process.” There will also be a DJ that night, spinning tunes, and a special keg they’ll tap for the occasion. 7151 NE Prescott Street, Portland
And more Upright anniversary goodness. This Saturday, April 12, from 1pm to 9pm, celebrate 16 years of brewing Upright beers. Head to Upright’s Broadway location for new beers on tap, some special packaged releases, and food from Niños Birrieria. DJ No Sleeves will spin some tunes. 240 N Broadway, Portland

Also, did you know that April is Filipino Food Month? Over on Benable, I’ve put together a list of places to find Filipino food in the Portland area. Check it out (and if I’m missing any, let me know).

The update on Sassy Souk’s is not quite correct. The shop at 5003 N Lombard Street has closed, but she moved closer to 8727 N Lombard St, Portland, OR 97203, and is now branded as Souk’s Pho & Boba Tea.
The Facebook page and Google Maps listing is active. https://www.facebook.com/people/Souks-Pho-Boba-Tea/100063981375965/
Thanks, Jim! I’ll remove the entry since I have obviously gotten it wrong. It happens! I’ll return the entry when I can write something coherent about it.
