Missionary Chocolates Will Open in Portland’s Hollywood District

Opening soon: Missionary Chocolates in the Hollywood District.
Signage is up in the Hollywood District.

More good news from the Hollywood District: It appears that Missionary Chocolates will open in the old Just “4” Kids space next to the Sonder Listening Bar. This is on the heels of the news of Bar Hollywood opening recently; seems that things are looking up in the neighborhood.

About Missionary Chocolates

Founded in 2008 by Melissa Berry, Missionary Chocolates is especially known for their vegan truffles. In fact, all their products are vegan—including their chocolate-covered pretzels, sandwich cookies, chocolate-covered coffee beans, and more.

Berry originally studied naturopathic medicine. More on her story as it intersects with Missionary Chocolates: “What started out as gifts for her vegan mother quickly became a company, as a few months later her dairy-free truffles won first place at the Northwest Chocolate Festival in Portland, OR.”

In February, they celebrated 17 years in business.

The Hollywood District Location

I was very happy to see this signage up, and the idea of Missionary Chocolates moving to the Hollywood District is pretty exciting. I dislike seeing empty storefronts (which are no bueno), and this little strip mall has a lot of great neighbors: Sonder Listening Bar (in the old vegan Nectar space—I still miss their tofu banh mi), the Wiggle Room, Tropical Salvage, and Ragan’s Boutique. And the US Bank.

One of the questions that is at the top of my list is whether this is a move or an additional location (currently they are on NE Glisan, at PDX, and do the Shemanski Park farmers market). But what I do know now is that it’s pretty empty—basically a blank canvas as of early May 2025.

I’ve reached out to Melissa and Missionary Chocolates to learn more, and will pass on what details they share, and update this article.

  1. This is great! And the owner of Sonder is super nice, I wonder if she’d put the banh mi on the menu if you let her know.

Speaking of new businesses in Hollywood, we saw work crews tearing out insulation in the old Magnolia location this morning. Any idea what’s going in there?
