The inaugural Score: A Baker Fair, showcasing Portland’s independent baking scene, takes place this Sunday, June 8 at Zenger Farm. This is a chance for you to get a feel for the breadth (no pun intended) of the indie baking scene in one place, while supporting the work of this beloved urban farm.
Full disclaimer: This is not a gluten-free event, and none of the bakers have formally committed to bringing gluten-free items.
Score: A Baker Fair: A Background
Score was founded by pastry chef Eve Kuttemann of Southwind Microbakery (we have featured her galette des rois in our king cake roundups) and Drew Tyson, co-founder Chefs Week PDX. They thought it was a good idea to gather together and celebrate small-scale, independent bakers from all over the city, many of which operate outside of the traditional food system. And, I imagine, it presents an opportunity for them all to connect with each other—baking can be a solo occupation at times.
And while they are working to raise awareness of the work of independent bakers in Portland, it’s a chance to also support the work of Zenger Farm, which is involved with issues of food access and education.
“Score is part bake sale, part get together, part love letter to Portland’s microbaker scene,” said Drew. “Think treats, mini cooking classes, family-friendly chaos, and a lot of butter.”
What To Expect at Score: A Baker Fair
First, there will be a lot of carbs—tasty, delicious carbs. And they will be present in myriad forms: cookies, cakes, brownies, pretzels, bagels, english muffins, kolaches, scones, tarts, pies, viennoiseries, pastries, buns, doughnuts. And of course, bread—focaccia, rye, Danish Rugbrød, sourdough, and more.
And, as Drew says above, lots of butter.
Additional things to look forward to at the event:
- Free coffee from Proud Mary Coffee.
- A raffle to help raise additional funds to support Zenger Farm’s community food programs. Prizes include a Zenger Farm CSA share ($225 value), cakes and pies from each of the vendors, and gift cards to Portland cafés like Négociant and Taylor Street Kitchen.
- A plant sale of Zenger Farm starts.
- Free sourdough starter kits.
- Lawn games.
- A scavenger hunt through the Zenger Farm flower fields.
Zenger Farm
Zenger, located in Southeast Portland, describes itself as “a working urban farm that models, promotes, and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development, and access to good food for all.” And they are thrilled to be involved with Score.
“As someone who loves planning events almost as much as I love farming, it’s been a dream to work on a community gathering that brings together so many of my favorite things,” says Kristie Winberg, Farm Production Manager at Zenger Farm. “I got my start in farming at Zenger, so it feels extra special to help bring Score to life on the farm.”
Zenger Farm is also a hop, skip, and a jump away from one of my favorite spots in town, Leach Botanical Garden.

Of course, you’ll be able to sample and buy the fresh baked goods by the various participating vendors—it’s also a great opportunity to meet them, catch their vibe, and ask any questions you may have about their work and craft.

Eve wrote to me and said, “It’s looking to be a glorious day of delicious nibbles and farm-y fun!”
Proceeds from the sale of any baked goods go directly to the bakers, but all ticket sales support Zenger Farm. Tickets are just $5, too, and you can purchase them here. Kids 12 and under get free admission. Attendees who are able to are invited to make an additional donation to support Zenger Farm’s inclusive, community-rooted food programming.
“Score is all about the wildly talented bakers who are shaping Portland’s food scene one loaf, tart, and cookie at a time,” Eve remarked. “You’ll get to taste their craft, meet the people behind the dough, and maybe even learn a thing or two about what makes a great bake.”
Sounds like it’s going to be a great event. I hope you can make it!

Gluten free options?
Are there gluten free foods offered?
Hi Joanna – thanks to you and Ray for asking about this. My understanding is that this is not a gluten-free event and no bakers have officially committed to bringing GF options. I’ve added a clarifying statement to the article on this point that I hope is helpful to any GF readers.
Meg,
Thanks for the heads up. I wish I could attend, or better yet, participate, but will be selling.
Thanks for informing me of this event!
Gary, you are doing great work just where you are! I hope the season has been going well for you.
Get in there. Perfect day for checking out what’s new… and delish!
