After many months of anticipation, the wait is over—99 Ranch Market opened this past Saturday with a big grand opening celebration right outside the new Asian supermarket. It was definitely a festive occasion and we were there drinking it all in and having a good time. Here are some of the things we saw and heard right outside—and inside—the new store.
A Bit About 99 Ranch Market
99 Ranch Market is considered the largest Asian supermarket chain in the U.S. It was founded in Buena Park, CA in 1984 by Taiwanese immigrant Roger Chen. It has competition—Hong Phat, H Mart, and Uwajimaya, just to name a few—but holds its own. There has been one in Beaverton since about 2017; this is the first one in Portland.
Red Mountain Group
Red Mountain Group operates the Plaza 205 shopping center and one of their representatives was there. She said, “We all believed in the location. We believed in Portland. And at this point, you will see we had a couple of challenges in the center. [99 Ranch] cured one of them.”
She also talked about 99 Ranch’s neighbors:
- Ten Seconds Rice Noodle restaurant is to the left of Ranch 99. They feature foods from China’s Yunnan province—noodles and rice—and the eel rice plate is something I’d like to stop in and try.
- The Alley, a bubble tea spot, is to the right of Ranch 99. They offer something I haven’t seen before: Crunchy Milk Tea, with flavors like Crunchy Tiramisu Milk Tea and Crunchy Thai Milk Tea. The crunch comes from crunchy butter crisps that sit atop your drink.
- The former Big Lots will be occupied and by Teso Life, which is described as a kind of “Japanese Target.”
- There’s MINISO inside the supermarket, described as a “global lifestyle retailer.”
- They mentioned a “surprise restaurant” and that looks like it will be HK Café.
More from Red Mountain Group on 99 Ranch: “It’s really a tenant that will change your community, as you can see, and we really appreciate everybody coming out in support. We look forward to the not only the grand opening, but the continued success of this shopping center, particularly 99 Ranch.”
What You Get at 99 Ranch Market
They offer over 12,000 products in a 35,000-square-foot store. They have butchers on-site, complimentary fish frying and live crab/lobster steaming, samples, and a staff that speaks multiple languages. There’s a big parking lot, and the SE Main Street green line MAX stop is nearby, as is the 20 bus.
The Grand Opening of 99 Ranch Market
I got there around 8:45am and things were already starting up. There was a tented area with a switchback line of people eager to check out the new store (and the first 100 in the store got some promotional gifts).

Special Guests and Lion Dancers
Some special guests, including State Representative Andrea Valderrama, joined the introductory remarks.

There were lion dancers!

They did the ribbon cutting.
Inside 99 Ranch Market in Portland
After that, it was time to enter the store. The staff released the people in line in waves and I found my way in there around 9:15am. The place is beautiful and clean, tidy and orderly. There were baked goods, a hot deli, fresh products, a butcher, frozen and refrigerated items, snacks, beverages, household items/cookware, and plenty of shelf-stable goods.
By far the most popular spot when I was there was the live seafood section.

Later on they did a Bluefin tuna cutting show.
On a more mundane topic, I ran across bags of “sticky millet” and I am eager to head back to buy some and see what it’s all about. I suspect it’s much like sticky rice.

I also loved the look of these rainbow mousse cake slices.

The produce all looked great and I saw some of the nicest looking jackfruit I’d seen in a while.

Additionally, The SugarBee Apple mascot was there, and struck this pose for me.

At one point someone shoved a boxed SugarBee apple into my hand. I tried it and it was ok; Crimson Crisp apples will forever have my heart.
I loved how upbeat everyone was and I think the event went pretty smoothly. I’m happy to see 99 Ranch Market open in East Portland. I’ll be back soon!

Nice and clean. Going to give hong phat some competition
For sure!
Great market! Huge! It has everything you could possibly need for a meal, snack, DIY or ready made meals. Meat and Fish departments were amazing, friendly service, and no smells like so many fish/meat departments can have. Parking lot is huge, but completely full I’m sure because everyone wanted to see the new beautiful store! Congrats to everyone involved in bringing this great new Asian market to Portland. Thank you!!!
