Fast Times To Open in Original Sizzle Pie Location in Portland

A new pizzeria and soft serve ice cream duo called Fast Times is set to open in the original Sizzle Pie location on East Burnside Street. And it is owned by Matt Jacobson, one of the founders of Sizzle Pie. Here is what we know so far.

But First, the OG Sizzle Pie

Mikey McKennedy and Matt Jacobson opened Sizzle Pie in 2011. Mikey was the co-owner of vegan dive bar Tube and Matt was the owner (and founder) of Relapse Records, which features genres of grindcore, death metal, metalcore, and more. There’s a 2010 article in Portland Monthly about what they planned to offer at the time at Sizzle Pie, that is a good read.

In 2013 they were putting together Quality Bar next door, and in 2015 they opened a Quality Bar next to their West Burnside Street location. Of course, in 2020 the pandemic hit and caused hardship for everyone, though if anyone could have made it through that mess it was a pizzeria (or a sandwich shop).

Earlier this year, they closed the OG Sizzle Pie on East Burnside. The Oregonian reported this:

“The pizzeria isn’t closing due to the union efforts, but rather ‘an inability to reach a lease agreement with the landlord,’ said Ava Brenneke, marketing manager with Sustainable Restaurant Group, a part of SoHi Brands (formerly Sortis Holdings).” I will add that SoHi/Sortis does not have the best reputation in this town.

I can only guess that Matt was able to work with the landlord to come to an arrangement that allowed him to open this new pizzeria.

Fast Times: What’s In a Name?

When I saw the name, “Fast Times” as the pizzeria’s name, I could only think of one thing: that scene from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” when Jeff Spicoli ordered a pizza (from the pizzeria “Pizza Guy”) to be delivered to his class.

Fast Times (the pizzeria) has a strong 80s vibe; “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” was released in 1982. Below is an image they are using on the social channels, a kind of Robert Smith/new wave/post-punk look.

What To Expect at Fast Times

I’ve reached out to Matt for more details on what to expect but from what I can tell now, it’s pretty straightforward: Pizza, primarily slices. Their Poached job listing indicates “New York inspired pizzas and slices,” to be more specific.

Pizza by the slice sign.

I expect they’ll have meat, vegetarian, and vegan options. I have not seen a liquor license application come through yet.

While I was by the storefront snapping pics, a local guy walked by and said there had been some nights where they were open from 9pm to 3am. That timeframe was evident on the door that used to open to Quality Bar next door, which is now “Fast Times Soft Serve.” Pizza and ice cream is a classic combination.

They indicate on Facebook that they will be open late. A recent post by their neighbor B-Side Tavern also mentions “Lunch to Late Night”—love the gnome.

Closed tonight/opening soon at Fast Times.

A reader also mentioned they may open this weekend. Hopefully Matt will get back to me—I’ll pass on any additional information I get if/when he responds. I look forward to it!
