Purim 2026: Tasty Treats and Celebrations in Portland

Edie and a plate of hamentaschen for Purim 2026.
My then 7-year-old Edie who is now a pre-teen but still loves their hamantaschen.

The holiday of Purim is almost here—a joyous holiday filled with tasty treats and celebrations, observed by Jews around the world. Purim begins on the evening of Monday, March 2, and continues through March 3 (and through March 4 in Jerusalem). The holiday commemorates the story of Queen Esther, whose courage helped save the Jewish people from Haman’s evil plot to kill the Jews of ancient Persia.

Food plays a central role in Purim festivities, which is one of the aspects that brings so much joy. Purim is best known for hamantaschen—three-cornered cookies traditionally filled with jam, poppy seeds, or chocolate—though many places now offer creative sweet and savory twists. It’s also customary to exchange food gifts, known as Mishloach Manot or Shalach Manes, as my family calls it.

In honor of this holiday, we’ve rounded up a list of Portland’s Purim tastiest treats and celebrations. Be sure to jump on them early, as the treats tend to disappear quickly (or sometimes must be pre-ordered).

Purim 2026: Bakeries and Restaurants

Babkush

This specialty Jewish bakery, inspired by global Jewish flavors is offering a rich Purim menu this week. The lineup features three distinct hamantaschen flavors—including white chocolate and spiced prune—alongside Brown Butter Bebe b’Tamer, which are delicate round pastries filled with date paste and sprinkled with sesame seeds. The latter is completely new to me and especially intriguing!

In addition to their Purim treats, they’re also hosting a community food drive—an effort that reflects the holiday’s emphasis on supporting those in need. Participants are encouraged to drop items off at the bakery, which will be donated to the Northeast Emergency Food program. You can access a list of items they’ll accept on this form.

Purim orders can be placed until Friday, February 27 and are available for pick-up at Babkush Bakery between March 1 and March 3. Access the Purim order form here. 935 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland. Babkush website.

Baker & Spice

Hillsdale’s flagship neighborhood bakery is known for creating delectable Jewish holiday treats. This year, they will be featuring hamantaschen in three distinct flavors including apricot, fig walnut, and cherry flecked with chocolate for $3.50 each. Pro tip: We suggest pre-ordering these, as their specialty holiday items tend to sell out quickly. 6330 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland. Baker & Spice website.

Leikam Brewing

This Southeast community centered Kosher brewery will be hosting a Purim celebration (or seduah) on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy traditional food and libations in their taproom, which will be accompanied by a festive live Klezmer band. 5812 E Burnside Street, Portland. Leikam Brewing website.

Mother’s Bistro

It’s great to see that Mother’s, Portland’s iconic comfort food eatery, will feature hamantaschen on their dessert menu the entire weekend leading up to the holiday. They’ll showcase three traditional varieties including prune, poppyseed, and apricot for $3/piece. Mmmm … makes me think of my mom’s version, which is just the point! 121 SW 3rd Avenue, Portland. Purim 2026: Local Supermarkets

Safeway on SW Barbur Blvd

They have a great selection of Kosher foods and their hamantaschen offering does not disappoint. Drop in anytime between now and next week and indulge in their prune, mixed fruit, apricot, chocolate chip, and raspberry hamantaschen. $8.99 for a pack of eight cookies.

Also, while you’re there, you can check out their extensive Kosher foods section, which we highly recommend for assembling your Mishloach Manot for friends and family. 8145 SW Barbur Blvd, Portland. Safeway website.

Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods has an impressive variety of bulk cookies, sold by the pound. While they also have hamantaschen available for Purim, a fun fact is that they usually have it available year round! Flavors will vary by location but a few locales on the west side are featuring chocolate hamantaschen cookies with a raspberry filling, which sounds delicious. $12.99/pound. Multiple locations. Whole Foods Market website.

New Seasons

They will also have hamantaschen available starting this week in a raspberry filled flavor, which comes in a package of 12 cookies for $7.99 to $8.99. Made by Lilly’s Baking Company, a Brooklyn based wholesale bakery, they also make other traditional NYC desserts such as black and white cookies, rugelach, babka, linzer tarts, and more! CST Hamantashen Baking Project

Each year, Congregation Shaarie Torah, Northwest Portland’s 121-year-old Conservative synagogue in Nob Hill, hosts a beloved hamantaschen bake and fundraiser. The pastries are lovingly crafted by Sisterhood volunteers who gather annually for a communal bake to keep the Purim tradition alive.

This year’s flavors include apricot, peanut butter, and chocolate chip. While pre-orders have closed, you can still stop by to purchase treats in person on February 26 and March 1. Find more details on their Square site. 920 NW 25th Avenue, Portland. Shaarie Torah website.

More Purim Inspiration

I love turning to Jewish cultural websites for holiday food inspiration, and the Jewish Food Society is one of my favorites. Founded and edited by Naama Shefi, this organization is dedicated to preserving Jewish family recipes and the meaningful stories behind them. Their bi-monthly newsletter is fantastic, and I highly recommend subscribing for a steady dose of Jewish comfort food and heritage cooking.

The latest edition highlights Purim Foods Around the World, featuring 21 interesting recipes. Alongside classic hamantaschen, you’ll find lesser-known but equally delicious Ashkenazi and Sephardic foods, including boulukunio—an almond and sesame brittle dating back to Medieval Spain that’s enjoyed on Purim and Hanukkah.
