A confluence of intriguing elements will arrive this month just north of SE Hawthorne Blvd: the return of Morchella in restaurant form; Double Down Lounge, a new name for a similar project; and a new use for the space that was, for decades, 3 Doors Down. It’s all slated to show itself off on Saturday, November 7. Here’s what we know.

The 3 Doors Down Element

3 Doors Down opened in the 1990s, establishing itself as an important restaurant in Portland’s dining scene. It closed in late 2024 after a change in ownership; then reopened in May 2025 with the original owner at the helm; then closed again earlier this year.

At that point, owner Dave Marth explained why they had to close:

“Thin margins, elevated food costs.” He also noted that energy costs were also rising, and you can’t run a kitchen without gas and electric. He added this realistic and understanding take, “Pretty much what almost every American is experiencing as well.”

These issues have not gotten better in November 2026, either.

Earlier this year, we thought this location was going to be a restaurant/cantina called Maura’s, from Alejandro Preciado and Katelyn Stewart of Salem’s Precious Pizza, but that did not pan out. Then, we learned that a bar called The Get Down Lounge was planning on opening.

The Get Down Lounge Element

In June 2026, the news arrived that Tigard-based Shela Aboud and Jacob “Jake” Kagan planned to open a bar called The Get Down Lounge. It was a curious decision to name it so, because there is already am established business called “The Get Down” in Portland—it’s a live music venue with a dance floor that has been operating for a number of years.

At the time, The Get Down Lounge looked to feature a DJ and local art in this 60-seat space. The Portland Business Journal reported on it back in June with the detail that an August 2026 opening was in the plans. That did not come to fruition—good chance Jake and Shela were trying to figure out a new name for the place.

And that name is “Double Down Lounge.”

The Double Down Lounge is owned by Jake and Shela, and exists under the same LLC as The Get Down Lounge did.

Jake has a lot of experience in the world of bars. He spent 30 years running a number of bars in San Francisco, including the Trapdoor and the bar at LuLu (both closed), and Mr. Bing’s. He loves this work and stated, “Reviving community local spots is what keeps me in this industry.”

There will be a bar program at the Double Down Lounge, rotating local art (Asylum Avenue Gallery) in the form of framed pieces and murals. The will also have a DJ and sound system, a big screen, plants, and comfortable seating.

They dscribe their cocktails as fast and affordable, “that won’t ask too much of your wallet.” And they are bringing on Morchella to do the food.

Morchella (2.0) at Double Down Lounge

Morchella—known for their deep interest in foraging and preparing foraged, wild food—had a home on NE Fremont where Fat Milo’s is now (they opened in April 2025). After they closed down the restaurant, they went on to do a number of events, pop-ups, and for a time shared a space on NE Alberta with Bonne Chance Wine Bar.

And although they have this new kitchen space, they continue to participate in external events. You can also hire them to cater your own events.

And it is led again by Cameron Dunlap, founder of Morchella, along with Chef David Stevenson. Cameron is known for his foraging skills, has done a lot of pop-ups and I believe he was involved with the recent Birdfat pop-up.

David has been in the kitchens of places like Firehouse, Blue Hour, and Biwa. He is also a professional forager and had been part of Morchella over the years. And now, he is stepping into the role of Executive Chef and partner at Double Down, offering a menu of “small plates that are fun, approachable, and rooted in the field and forest.”

The Food From Morchella

On the website, they describe Morchella as this:

“Morchella is a forager’s kitchen inside the Double Down Lounge, serving fun, approachable bar food with roots in Oregon’s fields and forest. Come in for a drink and a snack, or grab a few plates to share with friends. The menu follows the seasons and what we bring in from our own garden, local farms, and the woods. Good food, no fuss.”

On the website, they have recently posted their opening menu; the do work seasonally, so this is not a forever menu.

They are planning to open their doors at Double Down Lounge + Morchella on Saturday, November 7. After that, their hours will be Monday to Thursday, 3pm to 10pm and Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm to 2am.
