Today is Dolly Day. On Wednesday, September 23, City Council President Jamie Dunphy read the proclamation for Dolly Parton Day in Portland, which takes place today, September 25 (9/25, nine-to-five). The 6th Annual Tomato Fest is Saturday in Portland

Though we’ve had some rain recently, it’s still summer—and still peak tomato season. So Saturday, September 12 is an apt time to celebrate that queen of summer, the tomato. The 6th annual Tomato Fest is four hours of tomatoey goodness on a blocked off street in Southeast Portland—and buckwheat will be joining the chat this year. More details below.

Small Bites: Taqueria Mexa, Deals, Dediko, Ice Cream, and More

This is the decor at Taqueria Mexa at their NE 82nd Avenue location.

Taqueria Mexa is opening a second location. They’ll be taking over the Poblano Pepper space by PSU. They have a location on NE 82nd Avenue—right next to where Florence of Nana’s Exquisite Confections was (she’s got a new spot further down 82nd, opening soon)—and their food is really good. We took some home one day and absolutely loved it.

This is a great addition to Southwest Portland. They’ll be open every day starting at 10am, and closing at 8pm on Sundays, 9pm Monday through Thursday, and 10pm on Friday and Saturday. 1921 SW 6th Avenue, Portland

Pinolo Gelato Drops “Melody” for Gelato Day in Portland

On Tuesday, March 24, European nations celebrate Gelato Day—short for European Artisanal Gelato Day—honoring the excellence of artisanal gelato. Each year, the occasion is marked with a special gelato flavor—and this year it comes with a melodic twist! Additionally, it should come as no surprise that Pinolo Gelato, home to authentic Tuscan gelato, is celebrating Gelato Day in Portland, too.

Small Bites: República Returns, Dat Banh Mi, Better Half, and More

República returns. It’s true! They’ve decided to open back up for daytime service, Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 2:30pm. Founder Angel Medina posted the news on his Substack:

“Quesadillas. Tacotes. Guisados. Pozole. Maybe a surprise or two along the way.

No timeline. No promises. As long as you keep showing up, we’ll keep doing it right.
