Small Bites: Dolly Parton Day, Apple Pie Week, and More

Today is Dolly Day. On Wednesday, September 23, City Council President Jamie Dunphy read the proclamation for Dolly Parton Day in Portland, which takes place today, September 25 (9/25, nine-to-five). Apple Pie Week starts Sunday. This is a new food week from the James Beard Public Market/Oregon Taste. It starts on Sunday, September 27 and goes until Sunday, October 4, so a little over a week. You can find the list of participants on their website. Multiple locations

Top Hat Spice Shop celebrates 14 years. They’ve been in Sellwood for 14 years (FKA Savory Spice Shop) and tomorrow, September 26, they are having a party from 11am to 4pm. There will be great food, giveaways, and deals throughout the shop. 7857 SE 13th Avenue, Portland

Cariño Coffeehouse turns two. On Saturday, September 26 from 7am to 4pm, stop in thie Mexican American and woman-owned cafe, and help them celebrate their two years in business. Goodbye Flour Market, hello Nuestra Familia. Lisa Belt, baker and owner of Flour Market Bakery and Cafe sent out the news this week:

“I have made the decision to sell Flour Market Bakery and close the café. The very, very good news is that I have sold the bakery to the best people. The new bakery will be called Nuestra Familia Bakery and is led by Gabe Azcorra of Dos Hermanos. Gabe has been looking for a place to start a new business with and for his family—as a legacy—and the timing was perfect for me to pass on the location of the Flour Market production bakery.”

She adds, “I will be taking a bit of a break to catch up on so many parts of my life that have fallen by the wayside over the past six years, but I am keeping the Flour Market name alive and plan to do periodic pop-ups in the future with my son, Sean.” Read more on her Instagram.

Sizzle Patty opening in Vancouver. Not to be confused with Sizzle Pie. This is a new smash burger spot opening up next to the Cricket Wireless and near Ruby Pho & Deli, with the plan to open next month. “Their goal is to provide a premium burger and fries experience at a fair price. Nervous + Malpractice. Pete Souvall over at Nervous, which has been a coffee and pastry pop-up, will be spending time at Malpractice on Thursdays and Fridays starting Thursday, October 1. He’ll be there from 8am to 2pm making espresso drinks and selling pastries. 77 SE Yamhill Street, Portland

On Sunday, October 11, Veganizer will be at Takibi to offer a special vegan omakase (3 courses or 5 courses), along with optional cocktail, sake, wine, and beer pairings. ⁠The 5-course vegan omakase, $95, is only available with full table participation; additional vegan dishes from their menu will also be available. Sellwood Street Stroll on 10/10. This reminds me of the Portland Pastry 10K—there will be a 10K/6.2mile walk around Sellwood on October 10 that they are calling the Sellwood Sweet Stroll, which has very nice alliteration. Participating spots include Papa Haydn, Sebastiano’s, Piece of Cake, and Red Bell Bakery.

Free mycology walk at Headwaters. Join Brittany Marcotte and the Lower Nehalem Community Trust for a free walk to spy on some mushrooms. It will go from 11am to 1pm on Thursday, October 1. “Over about 1.5 miles of uneven terrain, the group will look closely at mushrooms, forest ecology, and the sometimes overwhelming complexity of fungal identification.”

Vincenzo’s Pizza will close. Their final day of service is tomorrow, Saturday, September 26; they opened back in 2022, where Hogan’s Goat was before them. They wrote:

“New and exciting opportunities came up for Vincenzo and Chelsea and they’ve made the decision to close the restaurant and pursue this next path forward. Rose City Park and Vincenzo’s Pizza will always hold a special place in our hearts. We feel blessed to have had the chance to meet, serve, and develop friendships with all of you. We exceeded our dreams and goals for this restaurant, wholly because of the customers, friends, family, and other business owners showing up to support.”

Pasticceria Pinolo Pop-Up. Happening this weekend (Saturday and Sunday), 11:30am to 2:30pm on each day. “We’ll be turning Pinolo into an Italian Pasticceria for the weekend!” There will be Douglas Young from Roseline Coffee guest barista-ing with a special menu of Roseline Coffee drinks; pastries from Sebastiano’s; and a return of the Brioche con Gelato with Seb’s Sicilian-style brioche stuffed with Pinolo gelato of your choice. Fika has opened in Ridgefield. No, not this FIKA. They’ve been working on this place since spring 2025 and finally opened on September 11. They use Longbottom Coffee for their coffee drinks, and offer pastries like cardamom buns and cinnamon buns, as well as Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce, Icelandic avocado toast (sourdough, avocado, egg, pickled beets, everything seasoning), and more. Oven and Shaker will close at the end of October. This is a BFD. “It’s with both sadness, but also a whole lot of gratefulness for nearly 15 years of business, that my partner’s and I are announcing the closure of Oven and Shaker Portland effective Friday October 30th, 2026.”

They’d like their final month to be a “wonderful celebration” and will feature “food and beverage favorites from the entirety of our time downtown…specifically an All-Oven Original Cocktail Menu that celebrates the contributions of our wonderful team of bartenders past and present.” Very sorry to see them go. 1134 NW Everett Street, Portland

This week I learned of the existence of “Ukranian shawarma.” Thanks to new local food influencer Vladyslav Zhdan. He’s a Ukranian dude trying all sorts of food in the Portland metro area.

He recently went to Shawarma Vancouver/ Шаурма Ванкувер for Ukranian shawarma, and it’s the addition of what he calls “Korean carrots.” They look like Morkovcha, a carrot salad created by Koryo-saram—those Koreans forcibly displaced by Stalin to Central Asia in the 1930s. It is absolutely delicious and I could see it working brilliantly with shawarma. Some folks in Vlad’s comments are kinda upset that it’s not “real” shawarma but their rejection of this combo means more for the rest of us.
