Sad Valley, a New Bar, Is Coming to North Portland

A new bar named Sad Valley—a name apropos in our COVID era—is coming to North Portland’s Humboldt neighborhood. They submitted their liquor license application relatively recently, so the hope is that they will open before the end of summer.

The place, as as far as its social media presence goes, has a bit of a dreamy feel to it. The model of the bar the owner made has a kind of Twin Peaks vibe because of all the red. Jeremy Michael Alexander, said owner, ran a popular bar in the Belltown section of Seattle called Neon Boots, which closed in early 2021. The location of Sad Valley is in the old Killingsworth Dynasty space, described by the Willamette Week thusly: “the vibe at Dynasty is somewhere between illegal warehouse party and DIY art gallery, with exposed-brick décor, PVC light fixtures and DJ nights dedicated to outre flavors ranging from post-punk to Japanese funk.”

So perhaps the place will have a kind of gritty-dreamy atmosphere. Alexander has mentioned he wanted to open a sister bar with a different concept compared to Neon Boots (describes as “desert-themed” by the Infatuation), and this might be it.

Looks like they plan to be open 7 days a week from 4pm to 2:30am. Look for 37 seats in the restaurant, 21 seats in the lounge, and 7 outdoors, but it would not surprise me if they tried to increase those outdoor seats in light of COVID. As for food and drink, that’s an unknown but I’d hazard a guess of strong drinks, a solid beer selection, and tasty bar food, including vegan eats. Their Instagram is fairly cryptic, so we’ll have to wait and see as far as these details go.

As always, we wish them luck and they prepare the space (there has been some interior construction this spring/summer) and get ready to open their doors on North Killingsworth.
