What once was a popular spot for donuts on NE Alberta Street—Angel’s, Tonalli’s—is getting new life … as another donut shop! They’ll be offering “craft donuts + specialty coffee.” Alberta Donut Cafe will open in this location later this fall. Here is what we know.
Some Background Search Details
I first learned about the impending arrival of the Alberta Donut Cafe in this location through an email from a Bridgetown Bites tipster. I’d been keeping my eye on the address in Portland Maps over the years, but was never able to ferret out anything substantial, so this tip was a big help.
During that period I received a number of messages from readers asking what was going on there; we all hoped something great would open up. I made a few attempts to communicate with folks associated with the property but I was unable to get a response. (Louie! What happened‽‽)
So, it feels good to share this promising news.
The Permits
A number of permits with start dates in 2026 were filed this year. Here are the Set Up dates and the kind of permit:
- 3/3/2026: Commercial Building Permit Business Addition
- 7/8/2026: Plumbing Permit
- 7/9/2026 Electrical Permit
- 7/21/2026 Fire Systems Permit
- 8/19/2026 Mechanical Permit
The most interesting one is the one from July 9, “Doughnut shop remodel with new panel and appliances.” Here are the things specified in this permit that need electical work:
New lighting, ice cream maker, under counter ice machine, espresso machine, under counter refrigerator and freezer, grinder, tamper, batch brew, doughnut case, counter top refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, 60qt mixer, 20qt mixer, proofer, glazer, BOH refrigerator, icer, sheeter, jelly filler, non-dedicated ice maker water filtration 20A receptacle/llighting ckt x 7.
What To Expect at Alberta Donut Shop
Judging from the list of things in that electrical permit, as well as the business’s own description, donuts, coffee, ice cream, and maybe more things like matcha (like Hansel, matcha is so hot right now). Here is the full project scope of the improvements to be made at this location:
- New kitchen equipment, sinks, floor drains, electrical, concrete floor, and wall finishes in BOH (back of house) area. New service counters, sinks, wall finishes, doors, and electrical in FOH (front of house), with some existing electrical and all existing rough-in plumbing retained.
- New exterior entry “marquee” (overhanging roof) over south door with new signage.
- Updated restroom with new ADA compliant fixtures and accessories.
- Existing mechanical to be retained.
- New covered waste storage area.
Interior Floor Plan for Alberta Donut Cafe
Here’s what Studio Eccos Architecture has put together for the Alberta Donut Cafe. Note: La Sirenita owns the property but Thomas Angel and Nicole Nang Ly are the tenants. Thomas Angel was not one of the owners of Angel’s Donuts—the Del Campo family was behind that and Tonalli’s.
Here is the floorplan, as of the writing of this article (click to enlarge).

Looks like about 27 seats, including two tops, four tops and window seats, likely stools. You can see some of the designated roles for certain ares of the cafe (click to enlarge):

Progress on the Interior at Alberta Donut Cafe
Judging from their TikTok videos, there are some piles of debris, but it’s possible it’s from the work they are doing on the interior.
I mentioned earlier that they are anticipating a fall 2026 opening. I’ve reached out to learn more and will keep an eye on it.
It will be great to have donuts back in this space! I’ll update this article with more information as it develops.
