Mattino’s Wine, From the Folks Who Brought You No Saint, Will Open in Buckman

Pizza from No Saint’s pop-up at Dame Restaurant in 2021.

While perusing my sources today I saw one document that had a big ol’ “No Saint” written on it. I thought, “Huh, that’s so familiar.” I wracked my brain and then it hit me—No Saint was the pizza/Italian eats pop-up I went to with my friend Annie many months ago. Turns out they are the same folks behind Mattino’s Wine, a “natural wine bottle shop + luncheonette” that will open on Hawthorne Blvd in the Buckman neighborhood.

Back in the summer of 2021, No Saint was popping-up at Dame, a natural wine bar in NE Portland. They offered pizza, salad, antipasti, and more. We got their Peaches & Cream pizza, which was delicious: peaches, Calabrian chili, sheep’s cheese, Italian sausage, and fresh mozzarella. It was the height of good pandemic eating outdoors, so the outdoor space was busy.

I’m happy to hear that the folks behind No Saint, Gabriella Casabianca and Anthony Siccardi, are opening a shop of their own. Portland Monthly shared that both of them had an “East Coast Italian American upbringing” and both of them have spent time at some of Portland’s most popular places to eat: Sweedeedee, OK Omens, Tastebud, Han Oak, and of course, their time working in the Dame kitchen for the pop-up (they ended their time there in January 2022).

Siccardi is the person behind the pizza, first working with pizza as a teenager at age 16 (presumably back east). The luncheonette part of Mattino’s would, I hope, feature some of his pizza work. These are thick pies, with square-ish slices. They are filling and tasty. He also owns Spumoni Wine, making “New-Age Wines from the Pacific Northwest.”

On the topic of wine, Casabianca gained experience as Sweedeedee’s wine buyer and used to run the wine program at Han Oak. No doubt she will be running the wine side of Mattino’s, with her experience. She is also a visual artist.

It’s unclear when they are opening, but when they do, you can visit them Thursdays through Sunday from 11am to 7pm. Along with natural wines and whatever they whip up for the luncheonette, they are also looking into having live music there.

The location is great—close to so many popular and familiar spots like Lucky Labrador, The Toffee Club, the Helium Comedy Club, Cartopia, and the Hawthorne Asylum Food Truck Pod. It will also be convenient to the Ladds 500—you can stop by after the race.

In my research I came across these words of wisdom from Gabriella Casabianca about what to wear for brunch: “Just remember your pants, and be nice to restaurant staff.” So folks—wear your pants and be decent when go to Mattino’s.

Best of luck to Gabriella Casabianca and Anthony Siccardi as they work to open Mattino’s Wine.
