Ladda Thai House Has Opened in the Old Ranger Station Space

Earlier this month I reported, thanks to a Bridgetown Bites tipster, that The Ranger Station had closed. I was told that in its place was planned a new Thai restaurant. Well, that detail is now a reality—Ladda Thai House is now in that location on SE Hawthorne Blvd.

The people behind the new restaurant appear to be Rasamee Smithynunta and Sumai Simluang, who also seems to be involved with Pinto Thai MLK that has been at the Park the Carts pod (MLK/Killingsworth). Ladda Thai House had their soft opening last Thursday, March 9, offering a variety of Thai dishes, many of them familiar to fans of Thai food in this town. You can find their menu here. Things that stood out for me as sounding particularly tasty include:

  • Coconut Zucchini—Golden fried coconut-batter fresh zucchini served w/spicy sour sauce and crushed peanuts
  • Bangkok Sausage—Bangkok-style Thai sausage, served with fresh chili, ginger, cabbage, roasted peanuts and cilantro
  • Larb Duck—Grilled duck mixed with shallot, green onion, lemongrass, cilantro, and mint, tossed with a spicy lime sauce and served with fresh lettuce & sticky rice
  • Spicy Coconut Noodles—Rice noodles in spicy coconut milk soup w/minced chicken or choice of protein, bean sprouts, and fresh basil, topped with a crispy fried wonton, crushed peanuts, green onion, and cilantro
  • Kang Tae Po—Tamarind red curry with choice of protein, Bok Choy, Kaffir lime leaves served with jasmine rice
  • Bangkok Fried Chicken—Signature golden fried Bangkok style marinated chicken served with sticky rice, steamed veggies and spicy plum sauce
  • Crispy Trout—Fresh northwest trout w/ shallots, fresh green apples, carrots, cashew nuts, lemongrass, sliced mango, and spicy lime sauce
  • Salmon Avocado Bowl—Sautéed salmon with our sweet sesame soy sauce, steamed spinach, fresh avocado and jasmine rice

That last one would not have struck me as a typical Thai or American-style Thai dish but it sure sounds good to me.

They have quite a good number of seats—84 total, with 40 inside and 44 outdoors. There are a variety of firepit type of warmers on the patio, which is nice during our cold, rainy evenings (and days). You can also order things for pickup or to go.

Looks like they are open 7-days a week—Monday to Thursday, 11:30am to 8:30pm; Friday and Saturday, 11:30am to 9pm; and Sundays from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. The patio seating closes at 8pm every day.

While it sad to see The Ranger Station shutter, I wish the folks running Ladda Thai House all the best as the bring their interpretation of Thai food to the Portland masses.
