Dueling Phos Are No More. Welcome, Javi’s Breakfast Cafe.

Javi's Breakfast Cafe opening soon.

Recently—like in the past couple of weeks—a change arrived on NE Sandy Blvd in Rose City Park. Pho An, that square-ish building with the tall hat-like roof, closed, leaving its neighbor Pho Korner on its own. A new restaurant is opening, offering the proverbial “something completely different”—Javi’s Breakfast Cafe.

Feeling curious and with newly reclaimed brain space, I pulled over while traveling on Sandy Blvd this afternoon to take some photos of the exterior and peer into the interior. As I was walking away, a man came out and yelled, “we’re opening next week!” Turns out, it was Javi, aka Javier Tapia, the titular subject of Javi’s Breakfast Cafe.

He told me that “it’s pho no more” and that they will be serving American breakfast: pancakes, eggs, omelets, benedicts, and coffee—plus chilaquiles and “really good sandwiches” (because they’re open for lunch, too). Javi has over 20 years of experience cooking in restaurants, mostly in Vancouver WA, including places like Biscuits Cafe and the Stardust Diner.

Along NE Sandy.

He told me that they are opening next Tuesday, May 16. UPDATE 5/19/23: The grand opening will be Thursday, May 25, 7am). They’ll of course be open in the mornings, probably around 7am or 8am, until 2:30pm. He’s pretty excited about this, and is getting his social media and web presence in order (thanks to the dedicated work by his son).

I look forward to checking out Javi’s and wish them all the best of as they move toward the opening next week.
