On the edge of the northeast corner of the Hollywood District lived Hot Lips Pizza. It closed back in March 2023 and a number of people expressed sadness about that. But according to city documents, a new pizzeria is opening in there: Fusion Curry Pizza.
Indian Pizza Is a Thing
While doing my research, I learned that Indian pizza is a thing. I had no idea, but after thinking about it for a little while, this combo makes sense. I mean, butter chicken on pizza, pizza topped with tandoori chicken, pizza topped with paneer, baigan bharta (roasted eggplant) on a pizza. It all seems like it could work and be delicious. Thrillist lauded the idea back in 2018.
This is what showed up in a recent Instagram search (“curry pizza”) regarding Indian pizza (TBH, I’d also be down for a Thai/pizza mix) in various parts of the country.
Who is Behind Fusion Curry Pizza
From what I can tell, Fusion Curry Pizza is run by Surinder Sahota, who has confirmed he is opening up in the old Hotlips Pizza space (NB: in a previous version of this article I mentioned that Sahota is behind Bombay Pizza & Curry; he is not. Fusion Curry Pizza is his own brand). BTW, another Indian pizza business is planning to expand into Portland: Curry Pizza House. We may be at the start of a new fusion pizza trend.
It will be very interesting to see what they choose to offer (I am hopeful for butter chicken pizza). I’ll keep an eye on it.
