After many months of being closed due to a fire, beloved Beaverton Chinese restaurant Taste of Sichuan will finally re-open this year. It has been a painstaking process to get to the point where they can open their doors, but when they do, it’s going to be a cause for celebration.

The Fire at Taste of Sichuan

On the morning December 13, 2023, a fire broke out at Taste of Sichuan; the cause was determined to be a cooking burner that was left unattended. Meaning, it was accidental, not arson. The firefighters got the call at 4:42am and they got it under control by 5:08am Nobody was hurt but there was extensive damage.

Last July, the Beaverton Valley Times published an update but there really wasn’t much new to report—the place was still closed, tied up in the process of getting the building back to a useful state. Apparently, “the landlord hired a restoration company that specializes in fire damage repair” and it was taking time. As for what it all cost, the number was indicated as being “significant.”

Updates on Social Media

Taste of Sichuan posted three updates to their Facebook page after the fire.

  • December 17, 2023: They expressed disappointment that they could not cook holiday meals for their customers. “The insurance company is currently assessing the damage. We hope that this will be a swift process so that permits can be obtained and the necessary can be made.” They had no timeframe for re-opening. More on Facebook.
  • June 2, 2024: They wanted to provide a solid update but could not. “The landlord has hired a restoration company that specializes in fire damage repair. They are currently working on the building. We don’t have any influence or control over their schedule. Once the company has finished their job, we will be able to take on our area of responsibility.” More on Facebook.
  • September 15, 2024: They update with a timeline guess of opening in 2025. “The landlord indicated to us that the fire restoration company will finish with its work early December. That pretty much means that we won’t be able to re-open until early 2025 as we need to take care of our area of responsibility. We are very disappointed that it has taken so long.” More on Facebook

Currently: Opening in June 2025

Update 6/27/25: About a week ago this comment was posted on Reddit: “I went and looked in the window a week or two ago, it was still pretty stripped down inside. They’re not at the stage of putting the dining room back together, not sure about anything else.” I also called the number on their website and got the message that “You have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

UPDATE 4/2/25: Looks like it’s going to be a June 2025 opening! Here’s the announcement on their website.

An earlier version of their website indicated an April 2025 opening.

Online commentary indicates this is music to their fans’ ears. However …. it is possible that additional delays will happen (and yep, that’s exactly what has happened). And I have never been able to get in touch with the owners. However, I’ll keep an eye on things and pass on anything else I learn about their impending re-opening.

Taste of Sichuan Is a Favorite

They opened the restaurant in 2011, and it has been a favorite for Sichuan food in the area pretty much consistently over the restaurant’s lifespan. However, there are definitely those that believe the quality has gone down after they changed chefs.

If you haven’t been, the menu is split into two parts—a menu of more familiar dishes, and a smaller section called “Take a walk on the wild side.” Here’s the introduction to that:

“While visiting China would be the ultimate way to explore its culinary treasures it is slightly out of the way. However, this does not mean that those who visited or grew up there are left to their memories to remember how authentic Sichuan cuisine tastes. At Taste of Sichuan, we have made an effort to reconnect travelers with their favorite dishes by highlighting them on a special menu. For those that never had an opportunity to try, it provides an easy way to leave the comfort zone and to be bold. So regardless of whether you want to reconnect, win bragging rights, or try out something new you came to the right place. Relax, sit back and enjoy and … take a walk on the wild side.”

I really like the mung bean jelly dish, fiery cucumber pieces, and Cheng Du BBQ Lamb. The shaved noodles are also very good, as is the Cheng Du Dan Dan Noodle (w/pork), dumplings, and scallion pancake. There is a lot of good food on the menu.

I look forward to seeing Taste of Sichuan open again. Here’s to reuniting in June.
