What We Know About Maglia Rosa in Portland

A new casual counter-service restaurant plus market called Maglia Rosa has been planned for the old Bollywood Theater location on SE Division. After 11 years in business there, Bollywood Theater’s final day of service was April 19. Owner Troy MacLarty and his team projected the opening to be “end of July,” and here we are at the end of July. Here is what we know so far.

But Wait? Wasn’t There Another Maglia Rosa in Portland?

Sure was! It was located inside West End Bikes (now closed) on SW Washington near SW 11th Avenue. The little coffee bar (there were only two tables) was originally operated by Heart Coffee Roasters. Then in summer 2012 Phuong Tran, 2005 U.S. Barista champion, started her Maglia Rosa there serving Stumptown Coffee beans. Sprudge reported at the time that while they competed “directly with the Ace Hotel Stumptown about a block away,” Stumptown seemed good with that, mentioning Maglia Rosa openly in neutral terms on social media.

Tran also featured a “gifted rotating cast of baristas” according to Trev’s Bistro. Willamette Week also mentioned their “bike-through” curbside coffee service (which sounds pretty cool). Maglia Rosa the cafe closed in 2014.

Will the new Maglia Rosa restaurant serve Stumptown? Only time will tell.

What Is the “Maglia Rosa?”

It is the pink jersey that that leader (the one who has the lowest aggregate time) wears during the Giro d’Italia, a three-week long cycling tour. Probably the only other cycling race that is more well-known or beloved is the Tour de France. The Maglia Rosa is sponsored by Iuman, an Italian underwear company.

Fun fact: In the Giro d’Italia there are three other colored jerseys:

  • Purple/Ciclamino, “Worn by the rider who has accumulated the most points over the stages.”
  • Blue/Azzura, “Worn by the rider who takes home the most points on classified climbs over the race.”
  • White/Bianca, Worn by “the best young rider.” Cycling Weekly adds, “It is, in effect, the same as the pink jersey yet can only be won by those who were 25 or under at the start of the year.”

Maglia Rosa Portland: A Restaurant and Market

In April, The Oregonian reported about the closure of Bollywood Theater (NB: their NE Alberta location continues to operate), and what to expect at the new place: “a new heated patio and four or five starters, some seasonal salads and charcuterie, 3-4 pastas, 3-4 entrees and a dessert.”

Other things I learned from The O in that article: COVID continued to dog Bollywood Theater; MacLarty likens Italy to India with it’s north/south dichotomy (I’d love to get Jim French of Pleasure Mountain‘s take on that); and that he had roots at Chez Panisse—which is one of my favorite restaurants.

Additional Details

They will have a focus on seasonality, and you better believe I’m particularly eager to learn about their plans for seasonal salads. They’ll start out being open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch (11am to 4pm) and dinner (4pm to 9pm). Their aim is to eventually be open 7-days a week.

The market will be open from 11am to 9pm on the same days the restaurant is open.

On their website they mention expanding to offer private dining and a supper club, starting this coming winter.

And I liked reading this on one of their Poached job listings: “It is our top priority to create a space where we treat each other with respect, empathy, and self-awareness. Each staff member is just as important as the next.”

My emails to the team remain unanswered regarding an exact opening date, but I will pass that on when I get it. In any case, I’m very much looking forward to seeing what Maglia Rosa will bring to Portland.

  1. I don’t expect their Market to come close to that reference photo on the Maglia Rosa website but I’ll be checking to see what they do have (still missing my old NYC Italian meats & dairy).
