Artisserie Lake Oswego is open. This French pastry shop and bakery opened at the end of August in Lake Oswego (they’ve been on NW 23rd Avenue for a while). They offer croissants, macarons, cakes, baguettes, and more. And brunch! Local influencer @micbanh was there recently and wrote about the brunch:
“The brunch menu is available until 3pm and features dishes like the Courgette Quiche, Suprême Dubai French Toast, Heirloom Cherry Tomato Toast, and more. They also serve bubbly and cocktails for those looking to indulge a little extra!” 50 First Street, Lake Oswego
Saturna for the holidays. Salona, which focuses on “Heritage Roman Cuisine in the PNW,” will offer Satura this year. Considered the “OG fruitcake,” it has pomegranate seeds, hazelnuts, figs, apples, sage, and local purple barley. Apparently it will challenge our ideas of what exactly fruitcake is. They are having an event on Saturday, September 27 (time TBD) where you can sample it. Takes place at The BeerMongers. 2415 SE 11th Avenue, Portland
Gnarlys is closing. This vegan eatery inside the Swan Dive nightclub is closing. They posted this week that they had “two weeks left” before closing, and that would make their final day Wednesday, September 24—though that could change. Stay updated on their Instagram on timing and food specials. Sorry to see them go. 727 SE Grand Avenue, Portland
Carina Lounge has closed. After eight years on NW 21st Avenue, they closed their doors on Saturday, August 30. On their website they wrote, “To our friends and neighbors, after 8 unforgettable years, we have made the very difficult decision to close Carina.
This restaurant has been more than a business…it has been a home filled with laughter, shared meals, and countless memories. W e have been blessed with incredible guests who truly became like family and a staff whose heart and dedication made this place special. We are heartbroken to say goodbye, but deeply grateful for every moment, every face, and every story we have been a part of. thank you for making this journey one we will always treasure.” 410 NW 21st Avenue, Portland
And Constantinople Restaurant will open in its place. Another restaurant will open in what is now the former Carina Lounge space. Called Constantinople, they will serve Turkish and Ottoman cuisine; previous correspondence with the restaurant’s owner yielded his approach as a “fine dining Turkish restaurant.” I have reached out for more information and will pass that on if/when I receive it. 410 NW 21st Avenue, Portland
Bubble N Tea is opening on SE Division. This boba shop that originally opened in Beaverton is expanding to Southeast Portland. They’ll be opening in what was most recently another bubble tea spot, Tea & Tea, which closed earlier this year. They’ll offer a variety of iced teas (milk tea and straight up iced teas), hot tea lattes, and smoothies. 3307 SE Division Street, Portland
Viking Pancake Breakfast is Sunday. Head over to the Norse Hall on NE Couch and 11th on Sunday, September 14 from 8:30am to noon, for the semi-monthly AYCE breakfast at the Norse Hall. It takes place in their Bergen Dining Room on the ground floor. Adults $12, Children ages 3 to 10 $6, Children under age 3 are free. Parking is free in the lot next door. 111 NE 11th Avenue, Portland
Burger Ritual grand opening this Sunday. Located at the Cartopia Food Cart pod, this new burger cart will be celebrating their official opening on Sunday, September 14 from 3pm to 9pm. They’ll have smash burgers, hot dogs, some great sounding sides (fried Brussels sprouts with a sweet and sour glaze, for one), batch cocktails, beer on draft, and their favorite Portland DJ’s: Maxx Bass, Kira Kira, Omie, and Daniela Karina. The first 100 customers will get two free drink tickets, and there will be giveaways going on, too. Plus they have a cool Medieval art branding style. 1207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland
The Paper Bridge gets some NYT love. Two Oregon restaurants made it onto the latest NY Times list of the 50 best restaurants in the country. That would be The Paper Bridge (here’s our early article), an excellent Vietnamese restaurant in Southeast Portland, and Yardy Rum Bar in Eugene. Big congrats to both! Here’s the article (unlocked). 828 SE Ash Street, Portland and 837 Lincoln Street, Eugene
Lunch service starts + expanded market hours. You can now enjoy lunch at Maglia Rosa from 11am to 4pm Wednesday through Sunday. They’ve decided on a rotating menu featuring sandwiches, salads, pasta, and snacks. More details from their PR folks:
“The new lunch menu launches with a trio sandwiches, including an olive oil-poached tuna sandwich, sliced mortadella and burrata on house-made focaccia, and braised beef with salsa verde and chili oil. Sandwiches are served with house-made potato chips and giadinara. The new menu also includes house-made pasta like zucchini and ricotta ravioli with Early Girl tomatoes, salads, and snacks to share. Maglia Rosa’s drinks include a blood orange shrub and a bottled Americano (Campari, vermouth, soda), eight wines by the glass, and local beers on tap.”
As for the market at Maglia Rosa, it is open from 11am to 9pm. They sell fresh pasta, house-made gelato and cookies, and imported products. 3010 SE Division Street, Portland
Ken’s Artisan Pizza is in the top 50 again. Tipped off by an article in The Oregonian, I learned that Ken’s Artisan Pizza made it onto the 50 Top Pizza World 2025 list, ranked as number 43. It was the only Oregon pizzeria on the list. Congrats! 304 SE 28th Avenue, Portland
Parallel is featured in Wine Spectator. This is a nice article about Parallel, a lovely wine bar with great food on NE Sandy in the Kerns neighborhood. Plus, I was reminded that they were a 2025 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner. Here’s the article—congrats to Parallel for the love! 3101 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland
ICYMI: Nico’s Ice Cream on NE Fremont has closed. Honestly, I’m not sure where I saw the news originally, but was reminded of it yesterday. During the summer, their NE Fremont location had a number off issues, including electrical problems, which cut down their ability to conduct business and serve ice cream.
This location has gone through other hiccups over the years, including structural and water-related damage. So, I guess Nico just decided to say farewell to this location. Both Yelp and Google confirm: permanently closed. They are still operating up on NE Killingsworth, though (maybe get a sandwich from Devil’s Dill across the street while you’re there). 5713 NE Fremont Street, Portland
IKEA celebrates 40 years. Sure, they are an international behemoth, but a lot of people like shopping there at Cascade Station. They are celebrating 40 years in the U.S. (I remember when their very first U.S. store arrived in Burbank, CA) and have some specials going on.
- Meatballs. Though I’m actually pretty fond of their Veggie Balls, their meatballs are very popular. You can get 40% off adult meatball entrées in the restaurant and 40% off packaged meatballs in the Swedish Bistro until Tuesday, September 23.
- Party on! On Saturday, September 27 you can head over for their free anniversary celebration. Enjoy anniversary cake, an 80’s style fashion competition, and giveaways for pre-registered Family members.
Also remember that at Cascade Station, the excellent ZabPinto Thai PDX restaurant is nearby. 10280 NE Cascades Pkwy, Portland
Estelle Imports wines at Fresh Love. Head there today from 2pm to 4pm to check out some of the wines from Estelle Imports. They’ll be there offering wines to taste and will also be available to answer questions you may have about their wines and wine in general. 7434 NE Fremont Street, Portland
The Gateway Fred Meyer … il est mort. It’s true—at 4pm on Monday, September 8, the Gateway Fred Meyer closed its doors for good. We knew it was coming. It’s the end of a 72-year era. 1111 NE 102nd Avenue, Portland
Fresh Fruit and Free Love: The Lewelling Family Legacy. This happy hour event on Saturday, October 11 at Sellwood Community House offers history, drinks, and snacks:
“Discover the fascinating story of the Lewellings—early local settlers who fought for abolition, women’s and immigrant rights, and helped shape the Pacific Northwest’s fruit-growing history by planting the first grafted trees at Waverley Golf Club. From secret Underground Railroad missions, to free love, spiritualism, and seances, this talk unveils a family whose passion for justice, fruit, and freedom helped shape history both in Oregon and beyond.”
Tickets are $45 (purchase here). 1436 SE Spokane Street, Portland
Epif is closing. Another vegan restaurant is saying farewell, and it’s a money issue. From their Instagram, “Pepe and I have poured our heart and soul into Epif, and while we would love to keep it open as is for many more years to come, it is no longer financially sustainable to do so.” Their final day of service will be Sunday, October 5 (though that date is fluid).
However, they wrote, “We are working on something new that we’re excited to share with you, so keep an eye out for more info coming your way soon.” So watch their social media for updates. 404 NE 28th Avenue, Portland
Your Inn Tavern + HBTG. The History By The Glass podcasters focused recently on Your Inn Tavern, a 102-year old bar in St Johns that started its life as a grocery store. Gotta love the punful name. Check out the podcast, here. 7004 N Catlin Avenue, Portland
Lombard House celebrates 9 years. This neighborhood taproom offering a range of craft beers is 9 years old this year! “Nine years of patina, bumps, and scratches, but also nine years of joy, laughs, Super Bowl wins and loses, slow days, busy days, pain, loss, tears, Covid shut downs, reopening, ups and downs and a lot of pride.” They also painted the bar for their anniversary. Head there on Tuesday, September 16 from 5pm to 10pm to celebrate with them. 7337 N Lombard Street, Portland
End of Summer Fig Fest. At one of my favorite plant nurseries, One Green World, they’ll be celebrating figs again during Fig Fest, taking place on Saturday, September 20 from 10am to 5pm. “We will be providing discounted figs plants, and we’ll have fig growers from around the community bringing in figs to taste, a potluck table for fig inspired foods, and an area for people to trade plants and scion.” They’ll produce the event along with support from Figs of the West, PNW Figs, and Willamette Valley Fig growers. More information is here. 6469 SE 134th Avenue, Portland
